I've Got The Itch!

Model 457

Custom
What are your thoughts on a Fabrique Nationale FNP-40? I've been toying with the idea of retiring the good ol' Model 457 and getting something new for my EDC. Nothing wrong with the Model 457. I just have the itch to get something new but I'll only shell out the loot if I can justify a purpose in my pea brain. I've never owned a .40 nor have I owned an FN.

Feedback on both would be appreciated.

My rationale is while the gNS was a fine pistol like your 457 it’s out of production so why? Parts will be problematic and all that.

The FN 509 MRD would be a better FN choice.
The S&W Shield 45 is hard to beat and would be the current compatible product to ykur 457 and they are quite soft shootjng 45’s

Just the direction I would go if it were me. And as much as I love HK stuff of you want something more somewhat service size but easy to carry. The VP 9 a1 K or X or the S&W M&P line or shieldX is quite a good option if you’re looking for a new carry item.

I neglected to mention I won't carry anything that doesn't have a hammer and it needs to be SA/DA.

I like hammer fired stuff as well. I run HK 45 or a P30L both LEM for duty, while a little bigger than that 457 I would recommend either the HK45 compact standard P30 or P30 SK or the USP compact (either 9mm or 35) with a LEM

While the HK is one of the best and duribke handguns theor DA/sA models the DA can be lacking.

THe LEM is the best of both it’s hammer fired with the travel of a DA but no weight until the wall.

If you only shoot a mag you will be “I don’t know” but run a 50 round box of ammo or shoot a qual through it and you will be sold. No safety no decocker a great design that should be more popular than it is!

Good luck

Presumably you Like your M457 , so that's your baseline .

Yes , FN are fine pistols. (And l am currently grooving with .40 caliber ) That said , you would have to try really hard to not think it is duplicating the M457 .

Added - only real difference is 14rd vs 7rd . Big deal for some , others more ho hum . If your current favorite is a 7+1 , and you like it , it's probably not a major priority for you

Less than 3oz weight difference, 1/4 inch bbl difference, both calibers starting with a "4" . ( Without gratitously reigniting the caliber wars , the performance of my preferred. 40 loads , are overlapping into decent .45acp load territories. )

Bersa are under rated . Not as nice as HK , but good enough , and good value .

The TPR 9C is another 3 Oz lighter , and cumulatively 6 Oz is meaningful difference, plus smaller still .

It sounds weird to recommend a Bersa over an H&K , especially when the asked didn't set $ as a major priority. But it is enough difference from your existing baseline gun to be a seperate thing . Plus gets you into the 9mm world .

( If you can hang with single action hammer fired , also look at S&W CSX - E .)
