Large Gun Safe Input Needed

Good morning folks, just looking for a little input please. I am going to be buying a new gun safe next month, something in the 60 gun size range... I was wondering if anyone had input on what to absolutely NOT buy as far as brands. There are so many out there now. Any experience based input would be appreciated.

I say the same thing every time this topic comes up.

1. Mechanical lock, not electronic lock.

2. Check your local want ads and for sale pages. You might even talk to your local locksmith as the poster above suggested, he may know people that are trying to sell a safe.

Several years ago my wife and I decided to upgrade our safe to a Liberty Centurion.

At the time the Liberty Centurion was selling for roughly $600 brand new. We paid $325 for ours. We bought it from an Air Force officer who was PCSing to SHAFE and didn't want to deal with shipping it.
 
I have 3 different brands and all work just fine. The cost range is around 2k between the highest and lowest. Fire isn't and issue on ratings as the sit on concrete and inside a metal building. Digital and mechanical locks are both fine. As far as a brand, I couldn’t help in that decision when a high quality safe with a high fire rating could be between 3-5k depending on extras (lighting, outlets and storage options). My next few will be the 1's you out together and still weigh 1k #.

There's a lot of good info in this thread. I've been window shopping for another larger, more robust safe as well.

I've been putting this off for awhile now, but me and my g/f closed on a house yesterday so now that I
1. Have the space, and
2. Will have people coming from all over to visit us since we can put them up, Have the need for one.

I do not have nearly as many firearms as alot of you guys here, so I do not need a giant safe. One to fit maybe 3-5 long guns and a few handguns / ammo / important documents should suffice.

I've dealt with alot of safe companies / manufacturers in the past as I used to run a locksmith & door company back in NYC, but I am curious as to what you guys use, who you...

This is a great idea, hell I shall be using that logic for everything now, how much beer do I need, double whatever I think. How much ammo do I need, already got double that...
I do love that idea though, since we just bought in Florida where our house is concrete and block, I could easily add a block bump out in the back and use a vault door, that would be sweet! Size Does matter!

If you build a safe room it doubles as a hurricane shelter. It is important to get HVAC into the room to control humidity

I wanted a mechanical dial as well, unfortunately getting into one under stress is more than difficult to be truthful. I didn't want a electronic because of the failure rate others have had. There are very very reliable electronic pads on the market, SecuRam Electronic being one of them. They DO NOT come with a spare key, they do not have the failure rate like the others. For a nominal fee with prosteel they are lifetime warranted against any lock failure or any other problems you run into. I've been super happy with my purchase. I bought it at Rural King at their big safe sale event that saved me $400. I will mention this, find the safe you want and then buy the next bigger size or 2 bigger sizes up, you will not be disappointed because you run out of space quickly. If they advertise 20 guns be aware you're probably only going to get 10 in it.
Here is another I looked at. I really liked they way they lock up. Impossible to pry open. They lock around harden bolts welded to the frame with a hardened steel sheet that locks around the hardened bolts.

For another measure of security I'd recommend buying a couple of smaller but still large safes instead of one large safe. It would take way more effort to crack multiple safes then it would one large safe. You could even bolt safes together with some slight modifications but you will most likely void the warranty.
 
Scheels would not deliver my safe INTO the house/former garage/now den, so I had a separate installer move from back patio into the back door. Once inside I was amazed at how EZ it was for him to move it without the dolly. Once positioned into the exact location he bolted it, inside down through the concrete floor. He said, it would have to be blasted out, so for me to just sell it as part of the house if I ever sold it. Then, there was my son who worked EOD in the Army for 20 years. He said he could get it out when he sold the house for my G'Daughter. Mech combo, rather than electronic! Lots of
 
In a regular safe most of the weight is in the door.

Lift the door off the pins with/by leveraging it off with a dolly (padded of course) then move the shell separately to put it in place then put the door back on.

IMO fire-safes are not worth it since in a major fire it will still get hot enough inside to change the temper of the metal, so the gun may look normal, unless it really cooks, but it's unsafe to use.
