Macular Degeneration - what to do about shooting?

Hi everyone, thank you for adding me.

I believe there may be others here who are experiencing similar situations.

My right eye, which I use for sighting, has PVD and AMD. It may be worsening over time, and I also have a retinal tear that was treated with laser surgery—though only time will reveal how things progress.

I would appreciate any advice or insights—has anyone else considered switching their sighting eye? Are there any devices or reticles that might offer assistance?

Thank you for your support. I've seen the other threads on the forum.

My problem is just old eyes. I have astigmatism in both eyes not horrible but it really does effect me using iron sights on a handgun. I couldn’t hit anything at 10 yards. So I went to a red dot sight but I have to use a 2-3 moa dot because the astigmatism make the dot a starburst but it made a world of difference in my shooting. Attached is target with 30 rds at 10 yards with my HellCat Pro. I don’t know if this will help you but you can see it did me. Good luck with your journey, I had almost given up being a decent shot with a handgun. But I found my solution. Be willing to try different things you never know until you try if it will help.

I currently have WMD in the left (receive shots) and DMD in the right which is my dominant eye. As of yet no vision issues with the right when it comes to shooting with irons or optics. The left has virtually zero vision looking straight ahead but I still have my peripheral vision in the left. I would try everything the same (grip/posture) then move my chin slightly right and then the left eye should be looking down the gun at the target. You could also try canting the gun to left gangsta style which should get the LE as the sighting eye. When I shoot offhand I use the 2nd description. Cant the gun right to use my RE. Best of luck to you going forward.

Wow! Two new guys in this thread to welcome to the forum. Glad to have you @cyber3dx and @Condition1.

My eyes are just getting old. I had cataract surgery on my right eye a few years ago and will probably need the left done in the next couple of years. For a while, before cataract surgery, my left eye was better than my right eye. I thought about shooting cross dominant and trained that way for a while, but progress was slow.

After cataract surgery my right eye was much clearer but could not focus as well on the gun sights. They were still usable but just a fuzzy mess. The new lens in my right eye gave me clear distance vision, but not close-up. Like using bi-focals for reading, I started using a bi-focal type shooting glasses. It's a product called 'Top Focal' from SSP Eyewear.

I use this Top Focal kit at the range...

I do periodically practice without the top focal lens. Since I can't tell the bad guy to give me a minute to put on my special shooting glasses, I've been training with an optic for my EDC. I do not have to use my special shooting glasses to see my optic. For now I'm using the circle-dot on my Holosun 507.

All this may be a moot point because I have no astigmatism, AMD, or vision flaring. These Top Focal lenses have made a huge difference being able to see my sight picture. They are great at the range but not so much on the street. Still, I just wanted to share what's working for these old eyes. I wish you luck.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

I have an Eschlon 4.5 with an RFX 11. Almost useless because the rear sight is totally blurred, and the green dot is fuzzy and flaring like headlights at night. I wonder if a different color, a red dot, or an illuminated reticle would help?
I'm red/green colorblind and find the Gold dots from holosun to be much easier to see against bright backgrounds. I'm not sure it'll help here but I'm not buying any other color dots in the future.

How come there are no impact holes in the plywood?

No plywood this is a National Forest Chestnut Mountain Shooting Range. They use plastic temporary fencing as target backer. I laid the target on the bench to take a picture so that I wasn’t down range taking up peoples shooting time. This is a very popular range a lot of people drive a 100 miles one way just to shoot there.

Men in general tend to have less red/green receptors in their eyes and the gold definitely seems more defined and sharper. Especially against bright backgrounds and I've read gold is good for astigmatism too.

I have two otherwise identical ARO EVOs, one red and one gold, and the gold is the easy winner.
I didn’t even know they made a gold dot I’ll have to give it a try. Thanks

Interesting. How does gold perform in daylight compared to night?
Great. I find it's best in the bright areas, it's more crisp and defined. Especially on otherwise difficult backgrounds. Red especially can get lost "in the noise" to me. It's almost more of an amber or yellow maybe than gold but I'm a huge fan.
