Magnum in the Middle: Why the .41 Magnum Should Be More Popular

The 41 magnum is one of those that I believe was misnamed from the very beginning...

Had it been called a 41 police or something besides magnum there might be plenty more mod 58s. The idea of the police loads were great but I think many department heads were afraid of the magnum moniker, and some of the troops would mix up the ammunition and lawsuits would abound.

It's just about .020" smaller than the 44, so unless you get above 265 grn bullets there's not enough difference to argue.

The 41 is an overall great cartridge that has existed in the shadows of the 44 magnum.

Earlier this year I picked up a basically NIB three screw 41, blued, 4 5/8ths barrel with all original paperwork, at a price I just could not ignore.

I say, you have more fun when you get it done with a 41!

I also have 2 RedHawks that are sequential serial numbered in 41 Magnum. They are the Hunter model, with scope rings, 7 1/2” each.

There are no flies on a properly loaded 41, for any game east of the Mississippi.

perhaps an under appreciated cartridge. I prefer a .44 mag, tons of offerings in both handguns and ammo. Besides, it's not too early to say the .41 mag is no longer the in between cartridge for magnums as these days it is on the low end. Today we have .480 Ruger, .460 SW, .500 SW mag and the linebaughs at the top. .44 mag might be the middle with .41 and less lower down the power charts. btw those 357 and 10mm loads in the article are weak loadings.

I’m on my second .41 mag. Bought with the intention of a capable stopper when I’m not carrying a rifle. 1st had a 6 1/2” barrel and proved to be awkward to carry, and would start dragging my pants off.

After looking at 400 reloads in the cabinet for a few years I decided to get a 4 1/2” Blackhawk. An improvement for my needs, assuming I need one at all 😉.

I have one that I got as a Christmas gift from my Father.

N Frame S&W with fixed sights.

I've shot it more than Dad ever did.

Aside from the green and yellow boxed Remington HTP, all other loadings are "special" loads.

You want to talk about self abuse, shoot 41 HTP with the guns original stocks on it........

Unless you're into pain, it ain't fun, even out of an N frame Smith
