1 man dead after being shot during ‘No Kings’ protest in Salt Lake City

A 39-year-old man died Saturday after being shot during a large “No Kings” protest in downtown Salt Lake City, Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd said Sunday.

Short version: Protest "Peacekeepers" saw a man getting out an AR style rifle. They fired at him. Bystander shot and died.

It is all too easy to armchair quarterback this type of situation, so I will try not to do so. What I can say is if it was my family or friend the "Peacekeeper" killed, I would want that person to suffer dire consequences. Although well intentioned, the "Peacekeeper" f'd up.

Hi,

It's a shame. The deceased was collateral damage, wrong place/wrong time. This incident goes to show you the importance of shot placement. Seems the "good guys" were trying to take down the "bad guy" with the rifle. I see a huge settlement for the family soon. The family also has my condolences.

Why in hell would he be bringing a gun TO a protest in the first place? Talk about asking for trouble, this is it. Let the police or guard deal with these morons. Shooter is going to have a bad day in court.

They both did, If the guy would have stayed away from the protest he wouldn't be dead now. Most people that attend those protest are looking for trouble. now if he was just walking through then it's a different story. if he was there protesting then he messed up too.

I'm of mixed feelings here and have lots of questions.
On the one hand, they may have prevented a mass shooting. A very good thing which probably outweighs other concerns.
On the other hand, why did "peaceful" protesters feel the need for armed security? Were they legal? Did LE know they were there?
I'm also curious about the suspect. Why would a latino be waving a rifle around at a anti-Trump rally? What was he planning?
