After years of field testing, the Marines this week issued the service’s largest contract for polymer-cased .50 cal BMG ammunition.

The five-year $95 million contract, awarded to Nammo to be filled at the company’s MAC facility in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, was issued on Tuesday by the Marine Corps Systems Command in Quantico, Virginia.

The Marines have been ordering polymer-cased .50 cal from MAC as far back as 2019. The company uses an advanced polymer caselet over a metal cap to reduce ammo weight by as much as 30 percent and provide cooler chamber temperatures, ejecting cool-to-the-touch cases. No modifications are necessary in weapons or procedures when using their polymer-cased cartridges.

Both the case and link are polymer.

I’m shocked the new rifle cartridge being adopted by the military was NOT polymer cased. Plastic is a lot cheaper than brass and a Whole lot cheaper than the 3 piece SIG😳

The average chamber pressuren for the .50 cal Browning round is listed in TM43-0001-27, the U.S. Army Ammunition Data Sheets — Small Caliber Ammunition, not including plastic practice, short cased spotter, or proof/test loads, is 54,923 psi (378,680 kPa). The proof/test pressure is listed as 65,000 psi (450,000 kPa).

50bmg ammo is like 223rem compared to 5.56. 50bmg has lower max psi than 12.7x99nato. Really it's closer to the difference of 308win and 7.62x51nato, but opposite as this time to 50cal nato listed with higher pressure. Somewhere around 2k psi difference. It could be a throat difference like the 223rem being shorter like 50bmg? I'll check when I get home.

Saving weight, $$ and I don't think the mil does much to police the spent cases.

I surprised that someone could come up with a poly case that'll contain that beast. Having humped more than a few cans of .50 BMG in my time, at a savings of 7 lbs to an ammo can and nearly 100 more rounds to a 100 lb batch, I can support it. (y)
