Marines not interested in switching from M27 to Army’s M7 anytime soon

The Marines are sticking with the M27 while they will also “continue to monitor development” of the Army’s M7.

The Marines have decided to stick with the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle instead of switching to the Army’s M7 Next Generation Squad Weapon rifle, a Marine Corps spokesperson told Task & Purpose.

“The Marine Corps will retain the M27 for our close combat formations as it best aligns with our unique service requirements, amphibious doctrinal employment of weapons, and distinct modernization priorities, while ensuring seamless interoperability across the Joint force and with coalition partners,” the spokesperson wrote in an email.

I suspect the USMC is also monitoring the progress of the 6.5x43 LICC program.

BTW - The Navy Seals and MARSOC (part of SOCOM) will get access to anything the US Army runs (i.e. the M7/M250), as well as special equipment.

The new 6.5 set up looks a lot better than the Army’s new round-appears to have a lot less recoil-important in full auto mode. The army’s round appears to suffer the same recoil problems the 7.62 suffered in the M14 (plus the army’s round appears rounds uses that goofy and expensive to make multi piece case AND runs at outrageous pressures to gain a few hundred fps)

The full-auto vids of the 6.8x51 (aka .277 Fury) in the M7 shows it's very controllable, light-years better than a full-auto M14.

I think the 6.5x43 LICC will eventually replace the 5.56, so the US military will go back to having two rifle rounds like it did prior to the adoption of the 5.56 in the mid-60's.

The rear echelon/support units will have the 6.5x43 platforms, and the close combat forces will have the 6.8x51 M7 & M250s for long-range AOPS (temperate environments) which will be over kill for shorter-range AOPS (tropical environments).

The USMC would likely just go with the 6.5x43 LICC platforms since the USMC is being reimaged back to a light infantry/QR Force.

The optics package on the 7 has laser rangefinder, ballistic calculator, atmospheric sensors, compass, visible and infrared aiming lasers, and a digital display overlay.

The 27 has a fixed bayonet lug. Something about that warms my heart.

Yep, the optics package is a bit of overkill IMO. Basically turning every rifle into a DMR, and the optics package is pretty $$.

Best to keep things simple for most of the users and sprinkle some high-end optic in to the user group.
