The US Army has announced that the MARS Inc and Barrett team has been selected as the winner of the xTech Soldier Lethality competition for the Precision Grenadier System.

MARS Inc.’s Squad Support Rifle System (SSRS) uses the long recoil action developed by Michael Merino, which is also used by the Olympus Arms Vulcan rifles, it feeds from a 5 round box magazine and fires 30x42mm grenades. The SSRS also incorporates a patented pneumatic dampener to help mitigate the recoil from firing a high velocity 30mm round.

Hopefully this will lead to a dedicated Grenadier, and no more silliness of heres your rifle and bolt this to the bottom. The M79 was a great weapon. Grenadiers were trained to be GRENADIERS. Then came the M203 and the soldier was expected to be both a rifleman AND a grenadier, which meant he either humped more weight of less ammo for BOTH the rifle and the grenade launcher. Neither is a good compromise

Id sooner suffer one less rifleman and have a Grenadier that can drop rounds on target
