Muzzle awareness it’s more than a suggestion

Which is a great reason to stay away from public ranges. Waayyy too many idiots out there.
Yep. I’ve seen a few that are decked out in “Tacti-Cool” clothing with their expensive range toys and fully accessorized firearms that are a Range Masters nightmare.
I show up with my old Blackhawk OD Green 3 Day Assault pack with every I need in it. I’m usually some well worn blue jeans, a t-shirt, running shoes and my old American flag Dad cap.

yep - yesterday we went to the range - typical older guy with the attitude you outlined "“I’ve been around guns my whole life and Uncle Sam trained me I don’t need a class”, yet he continually moved the muzzle all around often pointing it directly at others while fiddling with controls and ammo. One of the ROs went over twice to him, then myself and another patron corrected him about his firearms handling. After that I moved back from the firing line and would not get near him. Target practice over - but way better than getting shot by some "expert". Damn clowns belong in a circus.

All training is perishable. You constantly have to train the right way. I learned that when you slack up is when mistakes are made. Shooting with a like minded Range Buddy helps. We check each other so the RSOs don’t have to.

I’m just gonna say this, from time spent on ranges and assisting in training classes.

Unless they’ve had further training than just what was provided by the gov’t…ex military folks are some of the WORST when it comes to safe gun handling.

Cops are a close second, followed by the “I’ve been shooting since I was knee-high to a grasshopper” crowd (some of them were all three…they were often the ones getting ejected from classes).

I mean, nobody is perfect; we’ve all made mistakes in gun handling (if we’re being honest—I’m sure all of us don’t have to think very hard to come up with a serious cringe moment in their past, whether it involved flagging someone or yourself, forgetting to check a chamber and getting a bang when you expected a click, etc…). It’s how we react when these things happen that matters; you take it seriously, and learn so you don’t do it again? You’re good to go.

You act like it’s no big deal? GTFOff my range.

I agree. Range safety violations by past and present military personnel drives me crazy! A accidental discharge is NO ACCIDENT! The lack of muzzle awareness can and has injured and killed friendly soldiers and civilians.

I trained many folks over the years and the lack of knowledge and safety habits that people walk in with is just astounding. Many just never had anyone teach them properly, or developed unsafe habits over a period of years. I often wondered how some of them lived as long as they did. Although I saw great displays of ignorance from all walks of life, by far the ones who were most worrisome were the Bubbas, who thought they were born knowing everything about guns and didn't need no damn training. I was generally able to disabuse them of that line of thinking, but can't help worrying about those we didn't catch and correct. Then there are a few knotheads who just can't be trained. As experienced gun handlers, we really need to encourage folks to get training and emphasize gun safety to everyone around us.

Video games and movies do not make a weapons expert.

1st and foremost, know, KNOW if there is bang in the chamber. Then keep your fingers off the bang switch either way. While you're at it don't point it at anyone and keep it in a safe direction especially when your fiddling with it. BTW, I'm one of those ex-military trained, not LEO but certified to carry in the service of my state, (Prison guards in ME are not L.E. by law even though we have to take the same training and qualifications as the state police) and an older guy that's been around guns my whole life. ;) Dad taught me to shoot and would come back from the grave and beat my *** if I did something like that.

It's mind boggling really. It's pretty simple right. There's not that many rules you need to remember to insure you are always handling guns safely. It's not like sitting for the CPA exam for cryin' out loud. I think some people just don't think about the fact that it only takes one stupid mistake. Complacence kills.
