My Three Decade Journey with an M1A

Bought my M1A SuperMatch back around 1984. It is still my favorite rifle after all these years. I won a number of local DCM shoots with that gun. I then bought a lugged Springfield Armory receiver and had a buddy who built rifles for the Marine Corps shooting team (MOS 2112 Armorer) build me a custom Camp Perry Match level M1A back around 2000. He fitted an U.S.M.C. Match stamped Barnett heavy barrel to the receiver.

These Springfield Armory M1A's are the guns that you hand down to your children and grand children.

Great combat rifle, one of the best. I like it simple without all the gadgets and add-ons. The KISS method during high stress and extended away from base ops is always preferred. The iron sites on these puppies is dead on once the weapon is zeroed, also keeps the weapon slick and not having the worry of breaking something or knocking it out of zero. The best thing about this rifle is it is a killer, it'll even kill a Buick!

Hello all, here is today's article posted on TheArmoryLife.com. It is titled “My Three Decade Journey with an M1A” and can be found at https://www.thearmorylife.com/my-three-decade-journey-with-an-m1a/.

I fell in love with M 14's the first time I saw them, when I was around six or seven years old and my Dad was stationed at Fort Ord, California. I kept the love for it going on down through the years, never really thinking I could ever get one. Then I was talking to a local gunsmith in Monterey about how much I liked the Garand (He had a couple of surplus ones), but what I really wanted was an M 14, or an appropriate shootable civilian version, not a non-firing "replica". He told me that it was possible and went on about Springfield Armory. I ordered one that day (I think it was around July 1986). I still have it, though I haven't done anything to it 'cause I wanted to keep it as much like an M 14 in looks as possible. Even got a bayonet for it! Only put a few hundred rounds through it though, I really just like to bust a few caps on occasion, don't really go over board. It got some "oo's" and "aw"s" when I first brought it out to the Laguna Seca range to shoot, but they aren't hard to find in public anymore. I still love it. P.S. I moved to a Free State a few years ago, without ever "registering" it, so the Kommiefornia D.O.J. can kiss my ***. No registration here, not even a required permit for hidden carry.

I have owned two of these through the years. Fun to shoot and a great history. I had trouble getting either of mine to group acceptably. Not sure why. It does take a little finesse to shoot auto loaders accurately. like all shooting disciplines, It's something you learn and improve over time. I stay with my bolt guns... I can always group sub MOA with my bolts. Maybe there something here about teaching old dogs new tricks. My son loves the auto loaders and he is well practiced shooter. However, he has yet failed to demonstrate their accuracy. To be fair, he shoots handguns most of the time and that's where is real skills lay. So maybe I'm too demanding, maybe neither of us has developed that skill, maybe auto-loaders don't live up to their glitzy hype.
Of course, if I were sent into a firefight, an auto is a definite advantage. I wouldn't turn one down in that case.

I bought my M1A standard model the day I learned Obama would be President! I call it my "Obama" rifle. I have an Archangel stock and also an aftermarket stock but I like the original walnut stock best. It is not "national match" but it does not have to be! It will do everything I need it to do! I consider the M14/M1A rifles to be one of the best looking rifles ever made!
I also have a Chicom PolyTech M14 that is almost as accurate but is nowhere near the same quality as the SA M1A!! And it is not good looking at all!
Keep up the GREAT work guys.

Bought my Loaded Standard in 2000, it now resides in a SAGE chassis.
There have been many since the first, but all but one other, have gone.
That Loaded was the first brand new rifle I ever bought.

I HAVE TWO M1`S BUT NOT THE M14 YET. HOPE TO GET ONE BEFORE I PASS ON. I LOVED SHOOTING IT IN THE CORP. SHOT ALL BULLSEYES AT FIVE HUNDRED YARDS. I REALLY LIKED IT. I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS BETTER THAN THE .556. BUT THE .556/.223 HAS TAKEN OVER ALTHOUGH LOOKS LIKE THE 6.8 MIGHT GIVE IT A RUN FOR IT`S MONEY.

Do you have a pic of it?

By your leave Sir..........

You want it's serial number to verify it is an actual Loaded Standard?
