Need serious left hand practice

Sld1959

Went to the range today and near the end of the session I did my normal moving shooting drill, but this time left handed, something I have been way to lax in. Loaded two magazines maybe full, not counting rounds then started 30 paces from the target, draw shoot one round, holster move one or two steps backward or forward draw shoot one or two rounds. Continue until the magazines are empty. Results unimpressive to say the least. Definitely need to spend more time on it, lots more.

Shot low and left, which is partly due to my normal right handed left eye dominant shooting and the head tilt I use to accommodate it. BTW I like to use .22 lr targets sometimes because they are smaller.

In the last couple of days i've seen two different TV shows where the good guys had their dominant index finger shredded or severed.

It sure made me think...the choices are using my right thumb to pull the trigger, or shooting left-handed.

Never thought about having an itchy trigger-thumb

Practicing smooth transitions from right to left hand doesn’t come easy for me, especially with rifle. Adding the element of moving finds me shooting more C’s n D’s that’s for sure. But I practice bc ya never know…

Hi,

If you were to take that target and place it on the bad guy's chest, I think you would've done considerable damage. Sure, you want to be more accurate. We all do. That's why we practice. You are doing well.

My instructor showed us one technique that might help. Pointing the thumb up, next to the slide, could help keep from disturbing the muzzle/sight picture during trigger press. Something like this (except in your left hand):

I've been practicing like this lately and it seems to help. But, of course, I need a lot more practice. ;)

Keep up the good work!

Thank you for your indulgence,

NIce technique, but I hesitate to add a shooting technique that can be actually dangerous with a revolver because at least half if not more of my shooting is done with a revolver. That thumb looks like it could be very close to the position of a cylinder gap.

Oops. I did not realize you were using a revolver. Indeed, some techniques do not cross over between platforms.
