It is not a hole really, doesn't go all the way through, more like a pit mark.

Just saw the post where someone said this is a mark from where they tested the hardness?

Will see if customer service confirms this.
I checked mine with a really bright light this evening and XDMAN is correct. It clearly doesn't go all the way through and looks like a punch mark actually without the raised outer edge.

Yes,

The Springfield rep I emailed never said exactly that it was from a hardness test, but that it is a mark made as part of their manufacturing process, and that some barrels may even have 2 marks.

To me, if looking closely, the mark shown in this thread basically appears like a punch mark prior to drilling metal. Essentially is what the testing does by dimpling the metal to specific guidelines.
