I had never shot or handled a Platypus before ordering this one. However, I do research future firearm purchases. I saw videos and read really good things about the Platypus. The Cost for a 1911ish firearm that takes Glock 17 magazines with a ridiculous amount of color customization options and great reviews made it seem worth the risk - so decided to take the chance and pick one up.
Ordered - 9/1 at 8:30pm
Received - 10/23 at LGS
(Just under 8 weeks)
Features/choices I went with -
Commander - I just prefer this size slide w/ 4.25" barrel - well 4.75" with the added threads
Dual Slide - I like the slide cut on each side and front serrations.
Tactical/standard dust cover - No need for the full rail dust cover. The full tactical rail does looks great, though.
Magazine funnel - I went with the Magazine funnel for easier reloads as well as I do not plan on carrying this concealed - so no worry about printing.
Colors - Storm gray and Sniper gray - I like gray. Something a little more unique than black and if I didn't like the gun, I thought it would be easier to liquidate.
Prickle grip - After some research and the fact that I did not plan on EDCing this Platypus, I went with the Prickle grip. Also, when shooting outdoors I tend to wear thin gloves anyway. Once I got it in hand, I thought it might be slightly too aggressive, however at the range, shooting bare handed - I do not notice the aggressive texture in a negative way at all.
Threaded bull barrel - Extra weight for recoil reduction. I went threaded as I do own a suppressor and I like the option of running a compensator if I ever want to do that on this firearm.
Sights - Standard height with a white dot on the front. The direct mounted dot sits very low on the slide - because of this I went standard height as I did not want the sight too high in the dot window as they are backup after all. Only issue - in the rare instance I am shooting it suppressed and the dot fails, these standard height sights do not clear the suppressor. Close enough for me to adjust, but without the use of the standard height backup sights.
Skeleton curved trigger - It is very similar to the curved trigger on my Staccato P - which I like and shoot well. Trigger pull weight, I went with 3.0 - 3.5lbs option to make it a little lighter than my 4.5 lbs Staccato P.
Ambi - thumb safety - for better potential re-sale value as well as when I rarely shoot week hand. Thumb safety is solid with firm function - no play. It does feel a little small compared to thumb safeties on my other SAO firearms - but not too small for effective functioning.
Fit and finish is really nice on this specific firearm. It will be interesting to see how long the cerakote holds up and where it wears the most. I know the other concern is how long the aluminium frame will hold up. I'm not as concerned here as I am not a competitive shooter - however, with retirement in sight, I may be running more rounds through my firearms than in the past.
Range/performance thoughts - I've put around 450 rounds thru this firearm in 2 range trips - mostly 124gr FMJ, 124gr Gold Dots, 124gr Nato, 147gr flat nose, and 115gr FMJ. On the 2nd range trip, I had 2 issues - both with 124gr Nato - one I just could not figure out as it was not a traditional stovepipe or FTF - more of a FTE issue. The 2nd was a magazine failure as follower got hung up in the tube/mag extension (Strike Industries polymer) and failed to feed the rounds upward. I shot it at 15ft, 21ft, 25ft, 30ft, and 50 ft at an indoor range. I shot a lot of Mozambique drills at 25 and 30ft., rapid fire, mag dumps, and steady deliberate fire.
Normally I clean and lubricate a new firearm before shooting it the 1st time. I did not do this with the Platypus as it was pretty well lubed when it came in.
Definitely a keeper. In the future, I'll shoot it together with the Staccato P for comparison. Initial thoughts: this is a whole lot better than the Prodigy I had briefly. It may be equal to my Staccato P (aluminum frame) - but a better option due to cost and using the Glock 17 mag, and the numerous customization options. While I've never shot a staccato HD - for me personally, I would not see the point of spending that must more cash for a Staccato that uses G17 magazines. For my purposes, age, and skill level, the Platypus does it for me.
