Newbie with his first Gun

I just picked up my Echelon Comp today and have been getting used to loading, unloading, snapcaps into mags, and dry firing or aiming to get the feel which feels very tiring hehe. I have a lot of weird feelings going through me like pride, some weird accomplishment, and trepidation all mixed together but the real main reason I bought my gun is security.

I've battle cancer twice in my life and my last bout rendered me verbally impaired. I am unable to communicate verbally and I think that is why I've gotten insecure in my natural being which led to my purchase. My question is: (I'm positing a scenario) If I am defending my home from an intruder and I am looking to not use deadly force or try to de escalate if it's possible...How would anyone suggest I go about that since I am verbally impaired? And building on that, what about if I go to the range and I cannot yell "cease fire"? I'd suppose I would have to flag the RSO or even talk to them. FYI, I use a surface pro tablet for my communication purposes and I know that's not going to de escalate anything.

Welcome to the forum from South Texas. Sorry to hear about your situation I have serious hearing issues, have hearing aids but rarely use them. My wife says I talk way too loud. Before going to dot optics my failing vision almost stopped me practicing very little if at all. As far as range practice goes for you I would get a small red flag and advise the RSO why you need to have a way to ask for a cease fire. Realize this may not be ideal but at least you would be shooting again. The use of lethal force to stop an intruder is a different ball game. No doubt using verbal commands could be very helpful but I think you would know what to do if you or a loved one is threatened with great bodily harm or death from an intruder into your home. There are a whole bunch of decent folks on this forum sure there will be others besides me that have more insightful ideas than me. Good luck to you. Pretty sure you'll really enjoy shooting your new Echelon have one really like it.

I totally agree on the instinct part of in the home and what'd I do. I really like your idea on a Red Flag type thing (something highly visible) to get attention to anyone or the RSO. Flag type thing didn't even cross my mind lol, at first I thought a whistle type thing but I reminded myself 'you can't blow' idiot hehe.

Yep, tomorrow I'll be trying out my Echelon looking forward to it :)
 
Maybe on a portable device like a fone and get help recording phrases from someone you trust. Write down what you want said and maybe have index cards also. The suggestions might not help, but that's all I can think of at this time. Maybe do web searches for help about the subject?

No, I like that idea of flash cards too because I am imagining lot of gun shots, people with NC headphones so it'll be hard hearing something coming from my phone with its weak speaker, nice idea for short captioned cards.

Welcome to the forum from NJ and welcome to gun ownership.
Get to know your firearm, inside an out. Sounds like you are already doing that.
Get trained. Save yourself a lot of range time and ammo trying to "figure it out" on your own. Get some lessons under your belt, particularly intro to handgun. Then practice (this is a the fun part).
"Speak" with the instructor about your particular situation. They may have come across this before and may be able to offer good insight. There may even be programs already in place to help.
If you have a range nearby go to it and ask the RSO's about the "cease fire" issue. They may already have protocols in place to deal with this situation.
Finally, when you are comfortable with the basics of handgun operation and can land hits on paper look into a home defense course. The tips and advice can be invaluable and will help you put together a "plan" in the event that something goes bump in the night. (I understand that the plan may go out the window but at least you have one to start with.)
You may want to consider looking for websites geared toward the deaf community for tips on home defense communication aids. A little internet sleuthing may be in order.
Finally... Shooting handguns is not as easy as it is made out to be on the movies. It takes practice. You'll have good days and bad days at the range. Don't get discouraged. Also, keep in mind why you are learning to shoot. You're not looking for quarter-sized groups at 20 yards. Fist-sized groups at 7-10 is sufficient. If you can do that you're doing great.
PS- the gun community has some of the nicest most helpful people around. Ask questions and make some friends. Have fun breaking in that new gun of yours.

First off if they are in your home, show no mercy. they are not there to sing happy birthday to you. you can't negotiate with criminals. you will lose every time. I realize having to shoot someone will not be a good thing but remember you didn't ask for them to break into your home. You can't negotiate with thieves. but that may never happen so enjoy your new sport and get used to the gun.

I'm sure any range will accommodate you, you just have to ask what needs to be done. either using your tablet or the flags. main thing at a range is listen to the RSO and what he says. he will usually give verbal commands to stop firing so you can go downrange to change targets. but then again i haven't been to a public range in years so things may have changed.

Also welcome to the site.
 
Maybe get one of these small boat airhorns to carry in your range bag. Set it on the counter of the lane you are using so you can grab it quickly and give a short or long blast. A short little blast if you need the RSO's attention, or a long blast for an emergency. Of course, get the OK from the range beforehand, so everyone is on the same page.
