Nutria were the scourge of Blackwater Refuge for years, but they finally got rid of them. Shooting was a big part of that but birth control was probably what took it to zero.
In my growing up yard we had voles, a tiny ground squirrel like critter that had escaped from a lab at nearby University of Maryland about 15 year earlier.
They weren't natural to College Park but they seem to love it there.
