Agree, just OK. Am pretty familiar with the production. One myth is that the comedy genius, Bill Murray, developed all of the specialized drill routines. Sorry, this was largely the drill sergeants themselves who did that. Murray frequently wandered off somewhere for days then returned from who knows where.
The longtime character actor, Robert Wilke, who played the general at the graduation ceremony usually showed up drunk and that one scene took most of a day to complete. Warren Oates was great and related to the GIs having been a Marine. Sean Young as the MP was (at the time) a doll and friendly. Years later I saw her at the club at Ft. Hood while filming Firebirds. She could cut a rug on the dance floor for sure.
