  • SB168
  • What it does: Establishes a model process for local governments to divert mentally ill inmates from jail to treatment. Named the Tristan Murphy Act after a 37-year-old inmate with schizophrenia who killed himself with a chainsaw in 2021 while on a prison work detail. Also:
    • Provides law enforcement officers with crisis intervention team training
    • Establish the Florida Behavioral Health Care Data Repository to collect and analyze existing statewide data related to behavioral health care in the state
  • What it means for you: Inmates with a mental illness, intellectual disability, or autism must be evaluated and provided services in a community setting instead of incarceration, when feasible.
What in tarnation!?! How does one kill themselves intentionally with a chainsaw?

You would be surprised. We started getting a lot of what they classes as care level 3 inmates in the Feds my institution was made one for medical and metal inmates. We never had a big issue with mental inmates until around 2013 (right after the Affordable Care act shut a bunch down) and let me tell you we didn’t go a day without such major self mutilation happen like outside trip to the ER.

As a LT I have seen inmates jump off 2nd floor tier, cut off digits, like their own eye out, cut their stomachs and have literally feet of intestines exposed. And I could explain more graphic things but for that you’ll have to private message me.

They really don’t need to be in a prison they need to be on heavy doses of some serious medication!

What a crock of :poop:! There is a whole slew of codling, hug-a-thug, "we can fix em", self-perpetuating, counselors & head shrinks sobs that find EVERY I/M "sick. It's like having a cold but instead of Nyquil it takes understanding and counseling maybe drugs.

What it really means for you that the state has better places for your tax $ than protecting the taxpayer so they are going to put criminals in a "halfway house" near you. What could go wrong:rolleyes:

This is a very tough thing. I work for State Parole, so we get guys (and gals) after they have done state time for some pretty serous stuff. A significant portion have some serious mental health issues.
They all should have some punishment for the crimes they committed.
However, most don't need to remain in prison.
The issue becomes that most can do well IF they stay medicated.
So, the question is, then, can we FORCE people to be medicated?
I am 100% pro freedom. I am a pure blood, anti-vaxxer. So how do I reconcile that with forced mental health meds?
I have worked in social work for over 10 years and law enforcement goin on 6.
The cycle of mental health people doing well on meds, going off meds, committing a crime, going back on meds, etc...is exhausting.
But WHAT is the answer? Do we keep them locked up in mental institutions for life? Do we let them roam free, but somehow keep tabs and forcibly medicate? DO we just stand on freedom and leave them alone until they commit a new crime?
There injectable mental health meds that last about a month that seem to work pretty well.

I am not taking sides, merely looking for answers
