OTHER guns

The category OTHER gave us the Mossberg and Remington Not A Shotgun(s). So a receiver designed to fire shotgun shells but that never had a buttstock and an overall length of 26" (but legally with a barrel less than 18")

They are kinda cool for the "I want a sawed off but I dont want to do the NFA crap" crowd. I'll admit I like them; but they have their limits. Having an overall length of 26" is still kinda big and officially they are not supposed to be concealed.

Think of them as a Battle Axe. While certainly not for everyone, they can be devastating at bad breath range

They can be tucked away for mostly peaceful protests and urban troubles

One option with the OTHER guns is a brace can be added to make a useful short package with a 5 round capacity.

Adding a brace makes them a bit more useful to the less than Berserker crowd by spreading the recoil

I have used many SGs of this type and personally favor those in 20 Gauge. While there are less "combat" loads available, I find #2 BUCK or even BB to be effective at in close distances. I like the lighter weight and yes the lighter recoil; but mostly I like the way the smaller guns swing

Today a No Tax Short Barreled shotgun can be lots smaller. Of course the negatives of shortening a pump action is cutting the magazine capacity so its a pro/con issue. If youre satisfied with only a couple rounds, a SxS or O/U can be much shorter

They all started with the US Marshalls wanting a gun for close in witness protection, and thus the "WITSEC Shotgun" was born

For along while they were produced from cut down full size shotguns making them NFA items. Scattergun Technologies was something of a leader in the field, then they were bought by Wilson Combat and seemed to fade away. Thankfully the OTHER category allowed then to be produced as NON NFA items

I like it! I had a Mossberg 500 Marine JIC 12 gauge with a pistol grip. Shooting high brass put the hurt on my arthritic 1st thumb joint. Birdshead is definitely the way to go. And the thing about bad-breath range? BB at 50ft will dissuade anyone. :)

Yep I cant argue in favor of the traditional (90 degree) pistol grip on a gun like this. I have fired one of the Serbu Shorties, they look cool but damn do you feel the recoil. Replacing it with a Birds Head changed the feel completely. The negative to the Birds Head grip VS a traditional (90 deg) grip is that the Birds Head grip adds length

The Shockwave Technologies Birds Head grip on the Remington Tac 14 and Mossberg "Other" were made an inch or so longer than the original Remington Birds Head grip in order to make the guns meet the 26" OAL required for the OTHER category

The Birds Head changes the felt recoil from the shooters palm/wrist (regular grip) to the arms/elbows which allows a shock absorber action

I keep a Winchester 1300 Defender by the bedside for things that go bump in the night.

Any idea where I can find a Birdshead for it? Or will someone’s Birdshead grip work, like a Mossberg? I really don’t know.

I am not crazy about the pistol grip at all.

Thanks!

Try Shockwave technologies. They make/made the original BirdsHead grip for the Remington Tac14 and Mossberg Shockwave. Failing that Id start with a wooden stock for the 1300 and carve away

Soooo a gun the fires shotgun shells and has a barrel less than 18" is OK as long as it doesnt have a stock and the OAL is 26 inches and its an OTHER but if its under 26 inches its baaaaad. OTOH you start with a shotgun and shorten the barrel (less than 18") then it becomes a SBS (short barrel shotgun) OR you take that same shotgun and shorten the barrel to under 18", swop the stock for a pistol grip and promise to never put on a stock and it becomes and ANY OTHER WEAPON

The logic boggles the mind

With all the emphasis on SBRs because of the doing away with the $200 tax, it might be time for a SBS with a 12-14” barrel?

Come to think of it, I had one in the Nam…given to me by another Marine ready for the Freedom Bird. A Remington 11, roll marked “Property of the 2nd MARDIV trap and skeet club. Camp Leguene”. About a 10 inch barrel. Neat but never worked right. Not what you wanted to carry in the paddies. I had been issued a Steven’s scattergun by 11th Marines Supply. Worked much better!
