OVER 1 MILLION NFA FORMS PROCESSED SO FAR THIS YEAR, 6 MILLION SUPPRESSORS ON FILE

It seems that the feds have had to wade through a year's worth of National Firearms Act forms just in the first four months of 2026.

In the wake of zero-dollar tax stamps for suppressors and short-barreled firearms becoming a reality on New Year's Day 2026, the ATF's NFA Division has since processed a million forms as of April 23. The American Suppressor Association told Guns.com via email that over half of those are for Form 4 applications for suppressor transfers.

Of note, for 2024, the most recent year available, the NFA Division processed 1,373,305 forms. The Division only broke a million forms in a single year for the first time in 2011. Going further back, in 2001, only 311,892 forms of all types were processed.

The big takeaway, however, is the growth in suppressor numbers over that period.

I took the liberty of pulling the chart out of the article you provided. It’s interesting that the year over year growth had stayed pretty consistent since 2020 (note they skipped 2024 so a bigger jump, but on average about + 500,000 a year), and then the 1.3 million jump from 2025 to 2026.

Folks apparently cared more about the fake $200 “tax” than having their name on a Federal registry. I do think the 3d printing technology, better materials, and more education across various forms of media about suppressors helped too.

And then places like Silencer Central, Capital Armory, and Suppressor Shop helped take the mystery out of how to file the forms, as well as helping to streamline the process.

It would be pretty neat to see a similar article/chart for SBRs. I suspect there are a lot more of those registered too!

Not so much economy of scale of existing designs . But the marketplace adjusting to include offerings at all price points .

My initial prediction was late 2026 .

The USA market was built around the concept of : " It's so much hassle to buy one , so buy once , cry once , buy state of the art , made of exotic materials , to last the rest of your life , if not your grandchildren . "

Other parts of the world where Supressors are either unregulated , or no more difficult than the host firearm , the marketplace is different .

In New Zealand , they start around $US 100 , and something for most anything around $US 200 . Performence is * good enough * . If it wears out in 5 or 10 years , throw it away , and buy replacement .

Perhaps we need a pivot from the message that the gubmnet is bad and tout the healthy aspects of supressors.... they prevent hearing damage!

After all, its all about the marketing, right?
