Parking lots?

All this talk about open carry, ammo shortages, FL guide rods, weirdos at your door in the middle of the night that you just have to investigate (@NMEDGE ), living on the edge of civilization (@The Night Rider ) got me thinking about a pet peeve.....

Parking lots.

I hate the darn things, but I can't not use 'em. Big or small, can't avoid them.

Drives my wife crazy, but I drive around them, as in all the way around them, to recon before I pick what I think is the best spot. Sometimes that spot is the best defensible spot, sometimes it is the furthest away (not just to avoid the shopping cart, mind you!), just depends on the AO and destination. Layout also plays a huge part in selecting.

I do always park so I am in line of sight to the door of where I plan to go. I also just about always back in, if possible, and with a solid backdrop like a building, not another car, but I drive an F150, so I always scan the truck bed (that I keep empty) to make sure I have no uninvited stowaways.

If I can park parallel, then I will usually do so, giving myself enough room to skedaddle, and that usually means the end space.

Anyone else treat parking lots as hostile environments?

I think I may need therapy.

@Anchorite, I understand what you're saying and thinking. For a while there some of the parking lots at the major stores the next town over were getting a little sketchy to navigate with groups of illegals hanging around and walking through the lots in groups. I almost stopped going to them. But the local sheriff has been working, quietly and behind the scenes, with ICE and the parking lots are clear from the groups again ... and safer.

The leftist crazies and the news media's never caught on to the quiet cleanup until it was almost done. Ain't life grand!

I try to get an end spot too or back in unless I'm getting something big or a lot of bags, I need the SUV hatch to be able to open up.

Anyway, I'm similar to you, scan everything and everyone before I park and unlock the doors.

Absolutely! Several people have been attacked here in the Walmart parking lot during daylight hours. Yes they are dangerous

You don't need therapy. You need to move!
Sequim, WA...Semi-toothed druggies lived in their car for about two months in the Home Depot parking lot. Left their garbage all around the car. All four tires, flat. Don't know how many times I asked the store manager to have it removed. One day I saw the woman screaming outside the car and beating on the driver side window. I called the cops. Car still there a week later with the man and woman living in it. Cops did nothing. Some time later, the car burns to the ground. They found the woman inside, dead. I don't know any more of the details. Got to love blue towns.

I like to park on the end of the row so I'm not stuck in between cars when I get out or back in my truck. Even with that, when in a parking garage I like to park where I have a clear line of sight to the building entrance. The parking garage at the Galleria in Houston gives me the creeps. I feel the need for an AR 15 instead of a handgun.

No. Nor do I have to sit with my back to the wall, see the door, have all exits mapped out in my mind, etc. etc. etc. 25 years as a prison guard my situational awareness is pretty much on high without thinking about it. If something seems wrong, we don't stop. Nothing we need that much. The Mrs. and I have an agreement. If one says "lets go home" that means grab your :poop: leave everything else and exit stage left. It doesn't mean let's go home, just something doesn't feel right.
