Pellet Rifle Suggestions Needed

Water hose from my experience was the best way to break up a dog without with having to kill the aggressor. If that doesn’t work a paint ball gun will leave a nice size welt. As for air rifles Academy has a pretty decent selection.
As mentioned by another member be careful you don’t find yourself getting charged with animal cruelty. Dogs , chickens and livestock are considered property here. We live in low land area and I struggle with this, if I see a gator go after my dog I’m not sure I would show the restraint to not blast the sob.
I just hope I’m never put in that situation.

A water hose won't work, as I have several acres and can't drag a few hundred feet of water hose all over the place. I have thought about using a boat horn/air horn in a can, but still would have to get across several acres quickly, and I am disabled. Academy does have some good pellet gun options, but they are 50 miles away, while Tractor Supply is 10 miles from me. But Academy does have more choices and better prices. Like a few others have said, maybe a .177 pellet/bb gun with less FPS might be a better choice than a .22 pellet gun. It really does need to have a range of 150 feet for sure.

Crosman pump pistol. Pellet or BB. Cheap and reliable.

If you want to hurt but not wound cheap is going to be better. The problem you will run into here is that quiet isn't a given.

A break barrel Crosman is probably the best choice. Relatively inexpensive and I would think that wadcutter pellets will have the least possibility of injury.

Keep the FPS low. I would suggest a BB rifle but they are not especially accurate.

The problem is I need better distance than I can get out of a Red Rider BB gun.
 
Yeah, if killing a dog is not on your agenda a low velocity pellet rifle is what you need. I’ve got a 35 yr old RWS Dianawerk model 36 that’ll launch a .177 pellet at 1200 fps. Bought it for my Dad and he used it for years to kill groundhogs in his in town backyard garden. Whistlepigs are tough and he kill a bunch of them with one round each from that old RWS. And at 20 yards off a bag it’ll hit an Aspirin every shot. Not a toy. I’d be looking at something in the 450-500 fps range to discourage them-or maybe even a nice paintball gun shooting pepper balls. Dogs do not like those and that’d be a pretty effective deterrent without permanent damage. (Byrna or similar?)

You're probably stretching the legs of any non-PCP air rifle beyond 25 yards. You may want to visit the Airgun Depot or Pyramid Air website to do some research.

Air rifles aren't necessarily underpowered. They are capable of doing serious damage to target. Check out EDgun Leshiy's YouTube channel for some examples of what they are capable of.
