My hunts start at least 6 months before I load a round and step into the field. I make lists, I check off the items, then I scratch out things and make new lists. I start to pack, then remove things and repack. I plan my route and look for alternatives. If Im flying, I ALWAYS take a second gun and optic. Ive never needed the back up; but its comforting to know its there. If Im traveling with a buddy, we each carry some of the other guys gear and ammo in our bags, its another just in case, that Ive never needed but is comforting.
During all the planning, I read. I read the old hunting classics and modern field guides. I love the Perfect Shot series.
If you hunt you should have the Perfect Shot books. There are North American and Afrika editions. They are shot placement guides with target pics on actual animals and graphics showing internals to identify target zones. They come in a full size reference edition and a smaller pocket size for the field. So the next time youre jonseing for a hunt break out your field guide/
Short of Afrika's Big Five (Six if you include Hippo), my hunting passion is Wild Boar. They can be hard to stop, especially when charging. They arent "armored" as some claim; but they are tough, fast and more agile then youd expect. My general rule is if youre wanting the most meat and the surest kill take head shots, and if your looking for a European (skull) mount then break the shoulder
If youre reeeely adventurous theres a Perfect Shot Dinosaur edition, so the next time youre watching Jurassic Park, youll know where to shoot.
