"The Red Headed Stranger" is a legendary, tragic figure from Willie Nelson's 1975 concept album of the same name. He is a heartbroken cowboy from Blue Rock, Montana, riding a black stallion with a bay horse in tow, who kills a woman in a tavern for trying to steal his deceased wife's pony. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Key Details of the Story:
  • The Stranger: He is defined by his deep sorrow ("wild in his sorrow"), riding alone, and mourning his "little lost darlin'".
  • The Incident: After a yellow-haired woman tries to steal his cherished bay horse, he kills her, and is deemed free because "you can't hang a man for killing a woman / Who's trying to steal your horse".
  • The Song/Album: While famously recorded by Willie Nelson, the song was written by Carl Stalling (credited to Edith Lindeman/Carl Stalling) and originally recorded by Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith in 1954.
  • Legacy: The album Red Headed Stranger was a career-defining, outlaw country hit that reached number one on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
The chorus serves as a warning about the character:
"Don't cross him, don't boss him / He's wild in his sorrow / He's riding and hiding his pain / Don't fight him, don't spite him / Just wait 'til tomorrow / Maybe he'll ride on again". [1]

Willie Nelson, Red Headed Cowboy from Blue Rock Montana. My horse was a Appaloosa.over 60+years ago.
Thanks for getting the title right.65 plus years ago I was a red headed cowboy with a long red beard and I rode a big Appaloosa. The days were long but I loved every minute of it and so did my wife and daughter.
