Precision Rifle

Shibadog

Professional
I used to be a pretty serious varmint hunter, and I played around a bit with Garand shoots, and, for a while, a Colt Match Target AR. Thought I could shoot pretty well-not championship level, but certainly competitive. My #1 nephew, in his 40’s, has been shooting Precision Rifle for several years-never really paid attention until I saw a video of him at a match. 4 inch target at 800 yards. 4 shots on target from four different positions in 120 seconds😳,and you don’t move to the next position until you hit. I watched him run a course in 109 seconds. Dang, that is Fast and Accurate. Now granted, he’s using a special rifle and a weird 6 mm cartridge that he’s got big $$$$$ in and a scope that set him back more than $4k, but dang. That is Serious Shooting. If I was 40 years younger I’d like to try it (though I dunno if I’d ever have spent that serious of $$ on any rifle). At this match they had a Marine scout Sniper stationed at Lejune who competed. When it was over he talked to the nephew (2nd) and the winner. He said “wow, that was something. Never thought I’d get smoked by a dentist (1st) and a plumber (nephew).” Cool stuff!

Back in my service rifle days, we were shooting at Adair rifle range, I shot next to a Palma shooter. He was there practicing with his very expensive rifle, about $4500 in 93. The group he fired could have been covered by a paper plate. He was using some uber expensive metallic sights, and was shooting at 1000 yards. Very humbling day.

It’s an unbelievable skill level. I was absolutely amazed. I’ve shot pasture poodles and ‘totes at 4-500 yards and have shot paper at 600 but that’s pushing. 4” at 800 would, for ME, be a challenge if I had a lot of time. To get four rounds from four positions in under two minutes? I’d never make it.
