In comparison to short rifles, shotguns are longer, heavier, more difficult to reload, have lower capacity, and produce far more recoil. If we’re being honest, the world of shotguns is notoriously full of fudd lore like “just rack it and it will scare them away,” using bird shot or rock salt as defensive loads, or the silly idea that you don’t even have to aim.

Shotguns are Not Low Capacity Weapons - Swift | Silent | Deadly

A common refrain among shotgun detractors and apologists alike is, "shotguns are low capacity weapons." I disagree, and here's why.

My first "social shotgun" was an 8-shot Mossberg 500 with "rifle sights" on it. Would have preferred a simple bead, but that's not what was available at the time (mid/late '70s). Extra barrels for the 8-shot Mossbergs aren't common due to the mag/mounting system. Just a few years ago I spotted a used appropriate barrel in a LGS's barrel of "random junk" and scored it for just $20. Don't you love it when the stars align unexpectedly?

Over the years I had the chance to grab cheap not just one but two M500 "Turkey Guns"--20" vent rib barrels, screw-in chokes, and so forth. I had a tritium front sight put on one of them and took it to LFI-II in 1989 because I thought there was going to be night-firing of the shotguns. There wasn't, but the gun worked well for me and did everything I needed it to do, including putting slugs into a hand-sized group dead center at 50 yards. While at the class, I had the opportunity to shoot Booya Sam's LaRocca-modded Rem 1100 in 20-gauge, and I was VERY impressed with it. Recoil was quite mild (for a shotgun)--about like an M1 Garand or M1A. I've often said that I've never shot anything that could spit out death and destruction (within 35 yards, anyway) any better or faster than that 20-ga 1100. I've wanted one ever since, but 20-ga 1100s are not exactly thick upon the ground, and not cheap if/when you find one.

BTW, that tritium bead finally died a few years ago. I need to get a new one sometime soon.

Around 2005 I stumbled into a Rem 870 I could afford. It's a 1952 (IIRC) police model with 20" barrel with brass bead. I put an 8-shot mag extension on it and consider it G2G (good to go).

My son recently bought himself a Mossberg "tactical" semiauto 12-ga of some kind--I don't remember the model number. I haven't shot it (I don't know if HE has, yet), but it's a pretty impressive piece of kit. I like it, but don't know if I'd want one for myself. I'm an old-school guy and love the proven history and reliability of the Rem 870 and Mossberg 500 platforms. Yah, I'm old. Get off my gorram lawn.

He probably bought the 940 semi auto. Which is probably the third best tactical shotgun on the planet, right behind the Benelli M4 and the Beretta 1301T.

Shotgun myth #2 is you don’t need to aim.

As to #1–why TF would you want to give away your position to an armed assailant? Honestly, the “rack it and scare them away” myth is the most mentally deficient argument I’ve ever heard.

1st: I don't like the term "Fudd". Most likely because if I'm not one I'm sliding right up next to it. Meaning that I am not now nor have ever been a high-speed low drag, sniper, commando or try to give the impression I ever was. I don't prepare for the zombie apocalypse, ninja death squads or gangs of 300# meth-head bikers. I don't carry enough, ah, let's see, how shall we say, gear ya that's it gear to invade the Asian land mass.
2nd: Just rack it and the sound will scare them away, then don't bother with all the hassle and responsibility of owning a firearm. Just download the sound to your stupid ever present annoying phone. Play it at full blast, as needed and see how that works for ya. More important if they are close enough to hear me rack the slide, they are too bloody close!
3rd: Rock salt and bird shot. Rock salt is a good way to get your tail sued into poverty. Bird shot can work in the right circumstances, so can spears, machetes, frozen paint balls, cap and ball revolvers, etc. We are talking about the use of deadly force and protecting life and limb. Quit screwing around.
4TH: You don't have to aim. Oh for crying out loud. really? Just how stupid do you have to be to buy that.

If you read the posted article then you'll see that the OP introductory narrative is from the author of the article who mearly sets the stage for the real discussion in his article.

I'm not offended by the Fudd stuff since the myths aren't factual, and I don't fit into the category even though I know many in that category.

I've been getting re-interested in the world of the defensive shotgun lately, for a few different reasons. I still think they have a lot of validity for home defense, etc. I was playing around with this Mossberg today at the range, doing drills from 'cruiser ready' to reloads on the fly, etc. And I was quickly reminded of how devastating a 12 ga. blast can be. As with anything, you have to put the time in until running them is second-nature.

Not trying to change anyone's mind, but I am vehemently opposed to "Cruiser ready".
