Project Warhammer: Beginning a Shotgun Journey + Bonus

This is an older thread, but still I think worthwhile reading. Plus, there may be folks who were not forum members when it was first posted. Thanks for bringing it back to life, Hammer.

Like bc22wm, I don’t like the Fudd term either, but then again, am not particularly happy with what I see in the mirror either. :) And, I personally know of a case where racking the slide influenced a ner’do’well to change their mind. Yep, I am probably a Fudd!

Anyway, I like shotguns and have liked them since I was 9 years old when my dad bought a .410 for me to carry hunting with him.
 
I'm still getting to know my 940, but every time I shoot it, it just makes me smile, so much fun and so easy!

As far as Fudd, I hear great talks and claims of "having a thick skin to be able to make it here" so it shouldn't be a problem. There is a 17th Century saying from Molière's l'Avare which I think applies very well: "qui se sent morveux se mouche"

I think I want a t-shirt that says, "Fudd in Training." 😁

Back on topic, I think it's too bad that defensive shotgun skills have waned in popularity in recent years. It's still a very relevant tool, if one takes the time to develop the skills to run it (much like the defensive revolver). My goal in the coming year is to put more regular effort into shotgun practice and training. And if folks have good sources for info, please share them - thanks. 👍

Hans- You forgot Shotgun myth #3! We're all doing it wrong! All you need is a double barrel 12 gauge, point it straight up in the air from your balcony, and fire both barrels to stop the threat as recommended by an "expert" we all know. :ROFLMAO:
 
I've been toying with the idea of adding a shotgun to my home. Have an 870 hunting/clay gun, but Bassbob almost has me convinced to get a Benelli (he's not trying to convince me....just reading his posts). LGS has a used M2 for $1k....Problem I have is there is nowhere for me to pattern/practice with a shotgun unless shooting slugs. Might need to research private facilities....

My LGS has a few M3s, new, for around $1300. I'm holding out for the M4.


Surely there is a conservation area somewhere near where you can just shoot ? Any friends who own land or anything? The concept of not having a place outdoors to just go and shoot is extremely foreign to me. Never in my life have I not had a family member or friends with a little land.

You don't need a new shotgun. Just get a suitable barrel for your 870. I'd recommend picking up the CHEAPEST barrel you can find, of whatever length or choke--doesn't matter because you're going to hacksaw the barrel off at somewhere between 18.5 and 20 inches. Take your chopped barrel to a local gunsmith and have him install a tritium front bead. You should be able to pull the whole conversion off for well under $200--with a little luck, you might do it for under $100. ;)

Outdoor shoot is usually $$$ or a 1.5 hr drive and then $$$…
Urban sprawl and the effects of living in it

believe it or not, it would require asking a favor of someone (customer) that "may" allow it...but not something I would not normally do with a customer/vendor relationship. I certainly don't have anywhere I can just go any time. Plenty of places I can shoot trap, sporting clays, or slugs...but no ranges allow shot on wooden target frames that I know of...for obvious reasons.

Bassbob will let you bro. I bet I've decimated 50 pallets/target stands in the last 2 years. I will say it's much more fun to use 3/4 full 5 gallon water bottles though. Especially if they're about half frozen. When I hit the range with shotguns I usually spend about as much time cleaning up afterwards as I did shooting. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Any wooden target stands on my range are brought there by members and they are free to use or abuse them as they see fit. The range stands, which I am responsible for, are welded steel and it's often a challenge to keep them all in shape even with guys just shooting pistols and rifles at them.
