Hey folks!
I can't believe it's been two weeks since I was at the range. I usually go every week to tune up my perishable skills. You can tell I was perishing a bit today. It's been a while since I've worked with my .45 pistols so I brought out all three of them today and went to the closer/older range after church. I took only 150 rounds with me. That's about all I had time for because they close at 4pm on the weekends during their winter hours. There were a few shooters today and the guy just ahead of me got my favorite lane, #10, so I got my other favorite lane, #1.
I unloaded my case, got my target ready, and filled some magazines, for a couple of these anyway. You see the Bond Arms .45 Derringer (4"), SA Garrison 1911, and SA XD45 Mod.2 Tactical (5").
I rarely use that light/laser on the XD45. I should probably take it off and perhaps replace it with something brighter than 300 lumens. We'll see. I started my session with the idea of "aim small, miss small". Turning the silhouette around, I stuck on a couple of 4" reactive circles and sent them out to 10 yards. Let's see what I can do with the Garrison.
I put 10 hits on the top then 10 on the bottom. The first set of targets looked something like this.
Did somebody say "low-left"? It's been a while since I've worked with the "Big Banger". Hopefully it will get better. For the second set of targets I used 8" reactive circles. The top target came back like this. Oops.
Yeah, that first shot (marked) got way away from me. Let's see if I can do better on the lower target.
OK, at least they're all on the 8" target with more than half of them landing very close to where I was actually aiming. I've got 10 cartridges left in this box. I'm going to put 5 on the top B-8 center and 5 on the bottom. That's the plan anyway.
OK, no too terrible. You see three out of 5 are actually in the 10-ring. Now let's move on to the XD45. The trigger is totally different on this one, mushy with lots of creep and a break like a wet noodle. Maybe I should look into that. Here are the first two B-8 targets from 10 yards.
Pretty meh. About half of the hits are in the 10-ring. Let's put holes in another set of reactive targets.
That's a little better, tighter groups with several hits touching. For grins and giggles, I'm going to try the XD45 at 15 yards. I'll turn around a fresh silhouette, stick on a couple more 4" reactive circles, then try five hits on each.
I guess that's OK for me at 15 yards. If you give me a line break there's only a couple off the target. Oh, why not? Let's get a glam shot with that top target.
Then I went back to shoot 30 more rounds with the Garrison. I'm saving my last 20 rounds for the Derringer. With a little more concentration, I was able to tighten up my groups with the Garrison, well, except for that one flyer.
For the last 10 rounds through the 1911 I wanted to shoot a B-8. It was ventilated thusly.
Hey! There are 8 hits in the 10-ring. Does that deserve a glam shot? I think so.
Sure, tighter group, but still looks like there's just less low-left. I think I'll practice with this unit more. Next up is 20 rounds through the 4" Bond Arms .45 Derringer. The trigger on this unit is horrendous and my pinkie can't get a grip. I tried 20 rounds on this target but I can only count 14 holes. Wow.
I tried a couple shots using strong hand only. I'm pretty sure those hit the target somewhere. I think. Wow, this trigger is bad and the sight picture is anybody's guess. I'm going to have to take this pistol on the short range to get a better idea of the hold. (There's a 10 yard minimum distance on this part of the range.) It's definitely built for a short distance backup pistol. Maybe one of these days I'll get an ankle holster.
I really need more practice with my .45s. I have holsters for the 1911 and have taken a couple of training classes with it, but not the XD45. I think I'll have to have a holster custom made 'cause I can't find anybody who sells one. At both of my ranges they can press out a kydex holster, I just haven't taken the time. One of these days.
Anyway, thanks for letting me share my fun. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. All the best.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
