Range Report: .45 Practice, 10/26/25

Hey folks!

I can't believe it's been two weeks since I was at the range. I usually go every week to tune up my perishable skills. You can tell I was perishing a bit today. It's been a while since I've worked with my .45 pistols so I brought out all three of them today and went to the closer/older range after church. I took only 150 rounds with me. That's about all I had time for because they close at 4pm on the weekends during their winter hours. There were a few shooters today and the guy just ahead of me got my favorite lane, #10, so I got my other favorite lane, #1.

I unloaded my case, got my target ready, and filled some magazines, for a couple of these anyway. You see the Bond Arms .45 Derringer (4"), SA Garrison 1911, and SA XD45 Mod.2 Tactical (5").

AP1GczMwtpKnvEl7VhTXsKBPAd9jzqadJNrPw35-IaRQwWucO5UvEOWAN7CwGlDfyaHx5hCcIC39rJautkTBVU4Yqlw7Q2XteTvDUr21kaNvrHt0WHCVKka1IEC8NskV0CUqN8OoiG3U6zNrQ1jnA0BLzfKneA=w1651-h929-s-no

I rarely use that light/laser on the XD45. I should probably take it off and perhaps replace it with something brighter than 300 lumens. We'll see. I started my session with the idea of "aim small, miss small". Turning the silhouette around, I stuck on a couple of 4" reactive circles and sent them out to 10 yards. Let's see what I can do with the Garrison.

AP1GczPuNx694lzTLwiNFmSzxgltrcdbCQVHBKaSBhm8WjJZGpArmFIiuV3ghGfzEs18fH2B0TSa_kTEAUW3jxa7HU2A8j2jHMfp-vKSc7ARsnik3qDT_PI1J60bwGAO1y4WX7uiXucK1Y9xLtDVukoq91WONQ=w1651-h929-s-no

I put 10 hits on the top then 10 on the bottom. The first set of targets looked something like this.

AP1GczNw7wcpaJtWGj9b2Mdn4RYuel_XxmKr-EBCuOZ6U63J2TJSj7N4vph9ACWEfyawItWQmFNuh5HIOQ3UfDhLJeHzAPwr5H8b-1NDqGxMPg22o5nVqOHrvRFABgdqg8K6JnVcwExxUfZQZpC20qGQH-YYLg=w1651-h929-s-no

Did somebody say "low-left"? It's been a while since I've worked with the "Big Banger". Hopefully it will get better. For the second set of targets I used 8" reactive circles. The top target came back like this. Oops.

AP1GczNEVX0peFiL4jbimoSXtjZtK3glDQt5ZROAZVwzXoiEcWHdkhqp504C48mMHXreNI30iaPNCN4nB3RY7uOhLBTnb9yUmxSQ26lWcxH4OShLbeGe85ab8pod667_mBoCczCu8E0WKPG8_1Rq9OLXLwM9iA=w1651-h929-s-no

Yeah, that first shot (marked) got way away from me. Let's see if I can do better on the lower target.

AP1GczP_4UeSSm46wjHiQ4rJFZLYiXifQkG9BZQ47k9Z7b2G5cZAvZbGvVm_b9Cp_Ju3OuTBGR2NSEfc5IHOghAkT6ACF2yMoF6uDhiT_6FUgefSbNtQdfnsVDwShU0xC-M693PHWgyizjiIDi2Rh4kyOcC-jw=w1651-h929-s-no

OK, at least they're all on the 8" target with more than half of them landing very close to where I was actually aiming. I've got 10 cartridges left in this box. I'm going to put 5 on the top B-8 center and 5 on the bottom. That's the plan anyway.

OK, no too terrible. You see three out of 5 are actually in the 10-ring. Now let's move on to the XD45. The trigger is totally different on this one, mushy with lots of creep and a break like a wet noodle. Maybe I should look into that. Here are the first two B-8 targets from 10 yards.

Pretty meh. About half of the hits are in the 10-ring. Let's put holes in another set of reactive targets.

That's a little better, tighter groups with several hits touching. For grins and giggles, I'm going to try the XD45 at 15 yards. I'll turn around a fresh silhouette, stick on a couple more 4" reactive circles, then try five hits on each.

Then I went back to shoot 30 more rounds with the Garrison. I'm saving my last 20 rounds for the Derringer. With a little more concentration, I was able to tighten up my groups with the Garrison, well, except for that one flyer.

Hey! There are 8 hits in the 10-ring. Does that deserve a glam shot? I think so.

Sure, tighter group, but still looks like there's just less low-left. I think I'll practice with this unit more. Next up is 20 rounds through the 4" Bond Arms .45 Derringer. The trigger on this unit is horrendous and my pinkie can't get a grip. I tried 20 rounds on this target but I can only count 14 holes. Wow.

AP1GczNp0ndcaTKfkDKC5PZ9LnaPO--58ESkAWYe77XwqVeRdTGkdsf_FEE4cGrpdHcXYmoG0c6oLgI8EbP2ZOGuAnEFHJmsi5Mg6num_aqh5-QY7kWqd4HrtnH8zJtaVLlXF4dRsG1MU5LZxCzne9Bay_I1DQ=w1651-h929-s-no

I tried a couple shots using strong hand only. I'm pretty sure those hit the target somewhere. I think. Wow, this trigger is bad and the sight picture is anybody's guess. I'm going to have to take this pistol on the short range to get a better idea of the hold. (There's a 10 yard minimum distance on this part of the range.) It's definitely built for a short distance backup pistol. Maybe one of these days I'll get an ankle holster.

I really need more practice with my .45s. I have holsters for the 1911 and have taken a couple of training classes with it, but not the XD45. I think I'll have to have a holster custom made 'cause I can't find anybody who sells one. At both of my ranges they can press out a kydex holster, I just haven't taken the time. One of these days.

Anyway, thanks for letting me share my fun. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. All the best.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Then I went back to shoot 30 more rounds with the Garrison. I'm saving my last 20 rounds for the Derringer. With a little more concentration, I was able to tighten up my groups with the Garrison, well, except for that one flyer.

For the last 10 rounds through the 1911 I wanted to shoot a B-8. It was ventilated thusly.

Wow.

Not bad at all Cliff. As you progressed through targets your groups tightened a good amount. Bet that derringer is a handful/

Don't want to start an argument but I don't buy that. Just my opinion
Lots of folks just want to be “casual” with firearms. Shoot here and there and just be proficient. That’s fine by me. Not everyone is an enthusiast. Has a passion to go all the time.
He is, and takes classes and shoots to “improve” his skills. Goes all the time to the range.
After awhile you would pick up pointers/ technique on what you need to do to solve what one states isnt going correctly.

My 02 cents

Ya know guys, today I was just re-familiarizing myself with some pistols I haven't used for a while. I think this is only the second time I've ever shot my Derringer. I knew this session would be ugly. I like the encouragement and the tough-love coaching that goes on around here. It's all good.

When I'm training or practicing with purpose I can be pretty serious. Sometimes, like today, it's not quite as serious because I know I have some work to do while I'm trying to have a little fun. I make fun of myself a lot but I know when I could do better. I mention my consistency often. I'm not trying to be an example or instruct anybody in anything. I'm just sharing my experiences, the good stuff, the bad stuff, the strengths, and weaknesses. Hopefully some folks can learn what not to do from my bad examples.

As someone who's pushing 70 with bad eyes, I know I'll never be a competition shooter. The best I can hope for, and what I train for, is to defend myself and my loved ones. Forgive me if I repeat myself. I'm merely an old guy enjoying a new "hobby" I picked up five years ago. I'm glad Mrs. BassCliff indulges me. It's not worth quibbling over. Let's enjoy the fellowship.

Just almost 70, can't remember that far back.

Good shooting. None of us are perfect, and there is always a little "rust and dust" to knock off when shooting guns we haven't shot in a few moons. When I go out to shoot, I do try to have fun while being serious. As long as I can get it on target, I am happy. There is always room for improvement. May have to take my Springfield 1911 out and run it through its paces. It has been a while.

So here is my take from training many LEO's, and from being trained by many LEO's.

Basic marksmanship is golden. There is no substitute and we should strive to develop the best marksmanship we are capable of. After more than 60 years shooting handguns, many training and instructor courses behind me, and many tens of thousand rounds downrange, I am rarely satisfied with my performance. I am not a naturally gifted shooters like others I have known. I have to work at it. It is a lifelong struggle that I will never be finished with, but I still try to be as good as my abilities every session on the range. I also note that my skills drop off after about 2 weeks of not practicing. That is true for me with shotgun as well. Coming off several months recovery from knee surgery I lost my MOJO and am trying to get it back (what little I had).

With all that said, combat shooting is not bullseye shooting. Speed, power, and accuracy determine the outcome of gunfights.

You have to be fast, but not so fast to sacrifice accuracy. You can't miss fast enough to win. As Wyatt Earp said, you have to learn to hurry up slowly.

Your handgun must have enough power to get the job done. NIJ did a lot of research in the 60's and 70's to find the best caliber handgun to stop an attacker. Too little power and it may be accurate but won't stop the attacker. Too much power and recoil and muzzle flash my hinder subsequent shots, and training novices to shoot accurately on heavy calibers has its own set of problems.

Shot placement is key. You have to hit the right spot to put the attacker out of the fight. While precision marksmnship is important, it takes time. While you my be a deadeye marksman, that doesn't help if you took too long and your opponent has already landed several hits on you. It's why we shoot for center mass, or in the incapacitation zone rather than for a small bullseye in combat shooting. The goal is to land multiple solid hits quickly to win the fight.

With all that said, you still need a modicum of precision skills, in the event you need to land shots on a particular part of the aggressors anatomy or take shots at a greater distance.

What I want to see on an officer's qualification target are multiple hits in the zone with no misses and not necessarily a tight group, that are shot within a compressed time limit.

The rule of 3's is usually in play. That is, most gunfights begin at 3 yards or less, 3 shots are fired or less, and it is over in 3 seconds or less, so that is a priority scenario to train for, but don't neglect training at greater distances.
