Range Report: Advanced Pistol Class Outdoors, 6/21/25

BassCliff

Professional
Friends and neighbors,

I've been looking forward to this class for quite a while. It's the first class I've taken since my surgery and it was a great one. We were outside at McMillers Sports Club. They have several ranges for pistol and rifle, 25 yards, 50 yards, 100 yards, 200 yards, 300 yards, and several clay sport ranges, you get the idea.

AP1GczPuPKyc0SWLHQUeyEUyf-bFhxImNhNirel3emDu-uGP0-SiXp7J8c2LzbQ7uMbXbwdFU5U7eONdGj7IvPCLIO_ZU-cnQe7fpUk7XvK9ZIVL7z6qZYL5RO_qjmZ1iHf4CS5YHPCn6bo2xCUEMmjWNlKpxw=w1648-h927-s-no

We were next to the 300 yard range back in the Law Enforcement range area.

It was a little rustic but we had plenty of room for our gear and there was just enough shade for in between drills.

AP1GczOnLkXMp-cbPEo4Dxvdwy90Vfxe_DxHxB7-NSQBf8S8T81vLMhZ9mkezQ444cUNbgeGnfF4vox9Bl8kUMsrpYl3a6JXFBvvrSMKgRT_rvQa0eL5mXKKcgeBhQ9abJwiTHZULKinuyEzk0fjY-D8DqYL5w=w1648-h927-s-no

We tried to avoid the metal bullet catch above the berm but it seems others were not so lucky. The dirt was at least 15 feet high all around us so there was little chance of anything leaving our range. You can see the metal stop of the 300 yard range next to us there on the left.

There were twelve students today, all experienced. Most of us have taken classes together at the indoor ranges. Our first "warm up" drill was simple. Five shots to high center on command. We started at five yards.

The we repeated that string at 10 yards, 15 yards, 20 yards, 25 yards, etc, all the way back to 45 yards.

AP1GczMm8wC9fL7YVowORJSBM2hKF0ovG44OuE34nD6KPhQgSm8Pa-9kV_M6MRNc2I-yCsnmb_fnZOBej5-nHXKF5xT0rIRPiM9oAP1IJXy-RJwcBmQYio6vs6to47lwSV5jSPY3F1lUQRB-HZ_wChdpW0HdMA=w1648-h927-s-no

At the end of the warm-up drill my target looked like this. There should be 40 hits on the cardboard. I wish more would've been in the high center chest area. I need to practice more at this distance. I think I counted 39 hits on my target, including the one on the left stake.

The we got down to business. The instructors had planned several fun drills for us. Later we'll get to use some steel targets. We will also use that target laying on the ground for a special drill.

The class took turns getting the steel in the corners warmed up from 25 yards. I hit most of mine.

Then we split the class in half. My group first worked on this hostage drill. We just came out from concealment with our pistol in high ready, verbalized at the perp to draw his attention away from the hostage, then put two in the head.

AP1GczPfEt2IqtYscxcEilHBkg_BhIgUuAr6nuvGCF1hr6nsUgZw7zEZE_nh8-TfbPy8vMOMzL2yOA_1gDqm2_BVfUZzvz-0TEshxYWmc8xDVuvJHCf3GBZcS73gyE0DafJDyXWQbzbVX8Epk574L8B88ch4ew=w1648-h927-s-no

After that we moved to the other side of the range to run the El Presidente Drill.

AP1GczM6wvWjq1LS6wYCbvNLEOyukXUFpms1S-t9TqWQOINNVZeXv9mRdKdzvRYZIs5uE9N4KwJxHh-T8r3Ttj-I7Zy3DF7WcK0LENzdYJiv9cOd6E0dBluguyaS428lNhyOyBQe3_EdgCBjYVMdxV7thQg_dg=w1648-h927-s-no

My half did El Presidente while the rest of the class did the hostage scenario.

We took frequent breaks to hydrate and hang out a few minutes in the shade. It got over 90° today and the humidity here is terrible.

This was a fun drill. You see three barrels set up angled toward the corners where steel targets are located. The shooter would move around and between the barrels, moving, shooting, reloading as necessary, until all of their ammo was gone. I went through three and a half magazines. It's really fun ringing steel that much.

Two more students are getting ready to run the barrel/steel drill.

This is a good spot to take a break. I'm going to finish up this session in the next post. Our instructors have a special drill for us. Be right back!

Hi!

I'm back! This next drill is called the "Dicken Drill". You may recall Elijsha Dicken from the news three years ago. He and his girlfriend were in the food court at the Greenwood Park Mall in Indiana when a shooter armed with an AR-15, extra mags and other weapons, started shooting at mall goers. Dicken told his girlfriend to get down while he engaged the bad buy. He was armed with a Glock 43X. He stood up from his table and from 40 yards engaged the shooter with three shots, hitting him at least once. Then he rushed toward the shooter while firing four more times. When he reached the bad guy he put three more shots on the perp because his still had his rifle, still a threat. Dicken made 8 out of 10 hits, ending the threat. For lack of a better reference, here's the Wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenwood_Park_Mall_shooting

Here in the corner is a steel target, representing the bad guy, and another target laying on the ground, where the last three shots will be placed from close range.

The two white targets with the "X" are no-shoot, innocent bystander, targets. We will start at this table 40 yards away.

AP1GczN3BqXeVoeRmLMlkJVVNIP4eEJboas-wxSxQIuTEBFjoJNRE8G5wLU3w7bFG7Ooa6JlWIjspQqBliwRxZ66h6kV3puek-LKFkJmP9X_U69UzNbI3coylVJ66uNxeSoefBALTeFW0e3b3c5ZoJ-jupnZ0A=w1648-h927-s-no

We had two shooters go at the same time, working toward opposite corners. The exercise began when the instructor fired his gun. The students would stand, put three rounds on the steel at 40 yards, then move toward the target putting four more rounds on the target while on the move, and finally putting three rounds at close range in the target on the ground. A total of 10 rounds. I did pretty good on this one. I put one of three on the steel at 40 yards, all four on the steel while moving, and the last three in the target on the ground. That makes 8 out of 10, just like Dicken.

Then the instructors set up some anatomical silhouettes for the "Fletcher Drill". It's a timed drill with performance awards (for local bragging rights). Target #1 gets three to the chest, two to the head, reload, then target #2 gets the same thing.

AP1GczOFOB_Z9tgp7OATqintNQSKudQpcfY5Lb8RPLSQ5aZnh-rrWkAsbMfea28hJbYHuiwmVVx6pQrfMAZz2Innk67s3hgxTKcUXWVhKilKftaPM0Vq3kqCNK9G9d1HC4F0k7_KM8x-Q-Fwk8jhtqZmKgmQsA=w1648-h927-s-no

We all took two runs at this drill. I was trying to better my score from the last time we did this.

AP1GczN_I5xXyUSLn1lWbjlM9xoHEFDcM_ohUCXBICJ7uoavZ_CG_yEqBLk0aW14k9xunReVp9k--K66j6cPRYYy2m_vjYWCJCLbZIAzEIEVyYgnPRidSXLXpxmeiSec3lMyeuZ8oYHzqtlLBxbQ5Jz-GkBgoQ=w1648-h927-s-no

While I did get a better time, it wasn't quite enough to qualify for the next level patch. I needed less than 8 seconds to get the "advanced" patch and my time was 8.2. Drat, next time. I qualified for another "intermediate" patch, my second. Yay me. Here's one of my targets. I did have clean runs, just not quite fast enough.

AP1GczPf3YUDuB7jpSY4odtRTbICsbdbepv9AGjkhz1LWpIy6SxACx7UNFNZobJ52fsb2QTdoUNYxUggJvEGg1UWAsX5earOQktJXThAhcZOjzWFwI4qSymLW6-7_ovT2s9rCkZB-lDUOq0iksOj9Odd7bXefg=w522-h927-s-no

Our last drill was sort of a "gauntlet" drill. We had a line of steel and paper targets. The steels got one hit and the paper got two hits. There was a couple of "no-shoot" targets in there just to keep us honest.

AP1GczP-IwQYGVL31_6MCFa9_vH-f9sHCDeCc4HMzmDruPJMDdGYFM7jC3CivkmYNvcYxXsnv1_yz6jk1BJIAs7eIpCS6Hz41JFVMqB2ZR3u3zD2sJF0cQ9RztHefJzTVZ97yIBLYbqaCVVPPLez54DZMBxlOg=w1648-h927-s-no

There were three shooting stations. Starting on the left, from the first station we'd shoot one steel and four paper, then run to the second station. From there shoot seven steel and two paper, skipping the "no-shoot". Then run to the third station and shoot one paper and two steel, skipping the "no-shoot". This was also timed but I don't know how I did time-wise. All of my hits were good except for the last steel, which was a little smaller and a little farther away. I hit that one on the third try. I've got video of a few of these drills. Sorry, they're not me. But the last clip is our main instructor running the gauntlet drill. I think he missed more than I did but he was faster. All fun stuff!

And that was how I spent my Saturday morning, out in the fresh air and sunshine. I think my range is going to hold these special events once a month while the weather is good. I'll attend as many as possible. It's only a 40 minute drive and the cost is reasonable.

Then it was time to pack up and head out.

AP1GczMsyfzzpUIP7m7ezxUdrxPunirdrV-6d9L4bIaiUhQqZVz7twdSRy1Vw9oMnT3TetbBuu3ue-y-fbLQ1Lz_N2Z7absWQ4TRokbLyeXIFoIn8VjOiY6fvznWFNj0r_DDYqZJxJXMAuhSpHVKJabiW6j0eQ=w1648-h927-s-no

It was a beautiful drive home. I'm still quite awestruck at the landscapes, farms, weather, forest, crops, all the green stuff, here in the Midwest. I'm from the last of deserts and mountains but I think I can get used to this.

Believe it or not, I have another class at the indoor range on Monday. It'll be more advanced pistol drills but not quite as "wild west" oriented. ;)

I hope all of you are enjoying your blessings.

Hi,

Training is good.
I had a similar class for carbines Sunday. All was fun except my chicken salad sandwich lunch that was in actuality a botulism sandwich.

I have not yet taken advantage of the rifle and shotgun courses offered here. But that is certainly on my to-do list. Yes, it's great to train rather than just stand in a lane and shoot at static targets. Besides, it's great fun too. ;)
