Friends and neighbors,
I've been looking forward to this class for quite a while. It's the first class I've taken since my surgery and it was a great one. We were outside at McMillers Sports Club. They have several ranges for pistol and rifle, 25 yards, 50 yards, 100 yards, 200 yards, 300 yards, and several clay sport ranges, you get the idea.
We were next to the 300 yard range back in the Law Enforcement range area.
It was a little rustic but we had plenty of room for our gear and there was just enough shade for in between drills.
We tried to avoid the metal bullet catch above the berm but it seems others were not so lucky. The dirt was at least 15 feet high all around us so there was little chance of anything leaving our range. You can see the metal stop of the 300 yard range next to us there on the left.
There were twelve students today, all experienced. Most of us have taken classes together at the indoor ranges. Our first "warm up" drill was simple. Five shots to high center on command. We started at five yards.
The we repeated that string at 10 yards, 15 yards, 20 yards, 25 yards, etc, all the way back to 45 yards.
At the end of the warm-up drill my target looked like this. There should be 40 hits on the cardboard. I wish more would've been in the high center chest area. I need to practice more at this distance. I think I counted 39 hits on my target, including the one on the left stake.
The we got down to business. The instructors had planned several fun drills for us. Later we'll get to use some steel targets. We will also use that target laying on the ground for a special drill.
The class took turns getting the steel in the corners warmed up from 25 yards. I hit most of mine.
Then we split the class in half. My group first worked on this hostage drill. We just came out from concealment with our pistol in high ready, verbalized at the perp to draw his attention away from the hostage, then put two in the head.
After that we moved to the other side of the range to run the El Presidente Drill.
My half did El Presidente while the rest of the class did the hostage scenario.
We took frequent breaks to hydrate and hang out a few minutes in the shade. It got over 90° today and the humidity here is terrible.
This was a fun drill. You see three barrels set up angled toward the corners where steel targets are located. The shooter would move around and between the barrels, moving, shooting, reloading as necessary, until all of their ammo was gone. I went through three and a half magazines. It's really fun ringing steel that much.
Two more students are getting ready to run the barrel/steel drill.
This is a good spot to take a break. I'm going to finish up this session in the next post. Our instructors have a special drill for us. Be right back!
Thank you for your indulgence,
