Range Report: Advanced Pistol Clinic, 10/12/26

Ronin
Hello fellow shootists,

It was a pleasant fall evening for a drive out into the country to visit our sister range. I don't shoot outdoors as much as I used to and this class is a real treat.

This is a good sized outdoor facility with 25, 50, 100, 200, and 300 yard ranges. They also have airsoft and bow areas. There are plans to construct a 1000 yard range, if the next election goes the right way.

Our class is held behind the trap shooting area on the LEO training range. (No, they are not used at the same time.)

The sun was already close to the horizon by the time we got started. We started shooting warm-ups on the cardboard silhouettes at 10, 15, and 20 yards, center, head, FTS, strong hand only, weak hand only, with a little motion and pivoting.

Yeah, with the fading light, these old eyes could barely tell the difference between the cardboard color and the dirt berm behind. Plus my optic was flaring too bright. I was able to adjust it well enough to get through the class. Before we lost all the sunlight the instructors had us run the range standard Fletcher Drill a couple of times.

The drill: Start with two magazines with five round in each. From seven yards, on command, three to the chest and two to the head, reload, three to the chest and two to the head on the second target.

One of our instructors, Ashley, took a run at the drill. The other instructor, John, runs the timer.

When it was my turn, I took my place in front of two targets.

These are my two targets when I was done. I had a few misses but nothing major.

I got the line break on the second target. Even with the penalties (circled) I remained consistent with my "Intermediate" badge, under 10 seconds. Under 8 seconds earns an "Advanced" badge. Under 7 seconds earns a coin. There were three students who qualified for their coin tonight. I still have some work to do. Here's the video from my runs.

It's been a while since I used this Mod.3 with the Holosun. This is also the first time I've trained with these gloves. I like these gloves and they'll get faster as they wear in. Then we moved all the paper targets off to the side to run some drills with the steel.

But first John freshened up the paint to make them a little easier to see.

We started with a type of steel challenge. Starting from the outside working in, the center round gong was the "stop" plate. The first run was strong hand only, second run was weak hand only, third run was standard two hand grip, one hit on each plate.

It started getting pretty dark out there, despite the lights that were set up. Some of us used our flashlights or weapon mounted lights. It's good to train with all that stuff.

The last organized drill we did was sort of a 'round robin'. Because of the different size and shape of the steel targets, we would shoot a few rounds on command, strong hand, weak hand, one to three hits, then move over to the next target while the guy on the end went to the other side. This is me using a Harries flashlight technique.

We had some time at the end of the class so we were allowed to pick a plate and shoot a few mags just for fun, from 15 yards. I was able to use my Harries hold and put his on steel. Fun stuff.

The class had started at 6pm. Sunset was at 6:30. We wrapped it up at 8pm. It was really dark by then, being way out in the country. We helped Instructor John pack up all his gear, congratulated the coin winners, talked about future classes, and made our way home. We might be doing some shooting out in the snow in the near future. That should be a brisk endeavor.

Now I must figure out how to set this dot to auto-adjust brightness and see if that will work for me. I'm also going to practice dry fire with the dot so that the presentation is consistent muscle memory. It's been too long since I've shot this pistol. I've been playing too much with my new toys. Thanks for letting me share. Be brave. Do good.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
