Range Report: Another Fantastically Mediocre Practice, 4/30/25

BassCliff

Hello boys and girls,

Yes, I had a ton of fun getting out of the house but my marksmanship left a little to be desired. I'm still taking it easy after my surgery but I'm able to carry my range bags to my favorite lane.

AP1GczOA7H-qwhW4yTxYUBK1tGLPMafTzQrfwUpK0vM3769Ga7LZk83Mf_4ASLKOzICOoDlep2D25HvOctRnHVdajDFMab4gc-XfyFgP8GZ8PPwwBQyPmFu1r70ivbXTUg-hjEuyRPxPCcIWuRV1ysG8TUBGpQ=w1648-h927-s-no

I'm not supposed to lift anything over 10lbs so I lightened my load as much as possible. I brought only my brand new plinker, TX22 TORO, and my Echelon 4.5F Comp. No mals at all today using 100 rounds of the S&B 124 grain 9mm or the Federal Champion 36 grain .22, but I had a few from the 40 grain Winchester Wildcat. Funny, it didn't give me any trouble last week.

I started with the Echelon and a B-8 target at 10 yards, 10-shot strings. I used a yellow circle sticker in the X ring so that I could see it a little better.

AP1GczPVbsFUeZYs7DLCc9OO84R4JQXZZoJF1RmH6dVufLf98mZhnEzxfCapbNRUBRVddVu5cPPH-bcoSw92TJv21z9ZO2N6HW_lqo9rxoQNdGyN-0ONxuIxJIrPF-74KCkxemxAf9q6kSv2Tio6GWEmgndi8Q=w1648-h927-s-no

The first target came back like this. I thought I had done so well. There are eight hits in a tight group. I'll adjust my hold and refine my sight picture.

AP1GczOmWrtNk8e8lPuTjCqxTAw_H0qCQ_aqGSv41ABU3GscuAn3o5AyfGWuKZRSYMOzj3Gyf9bOJP7lXBiUOAFHc479GomiUE9i-TxSuFykHC4OSOLlIftkax5wdNdLDJd39ROSTG3G-xy4M7x1VUfLSAM-uw=w1648-h927-s-no

To be honest, I'm still not used to the sight setup on this pistol, the U-notch rear in particular. Sometimes I think I have to bury the front sight and then other times I use the "equal height, equal light" method. I might end up changing the sights altogether. After patching it up and putting ten more holes in it, here's target #2.

AP1GczNQ1fB7Jf6PmwlqeMOtsaYj522ZnPjzzwojsQydqnGFPSWZJBnBKQ4mfprbWYuCETLfVfThsEENWy_mKY9sLRhoW25jynS5_wZLlFvsZE_r9Iwa1kPj9Q3fHSPUImidFGaVWh8rb4ErOYZ5NhoHWaeRnw=w1648-h927-s-no

Yeah, that's really average. Target #3 is starting to shape up with only two out of the black and five in the 10-ring. (Line break!)

AP1GczOrORpnH-rKmKQi-ZqFwMQWmx2t_JXuIwuwC0kDj_APkZ82U-qzvvcNdggGf3c38wu6CoWd1-gaUPiR_Lk2hd0y6CilQ2UOqS4NvjbJjZjgLwu1FQjuqL3iZ1trYF4J9knvuT5r_paKbkd9fza0697h2w=w1648-h927-s-no

Target #4 has a really tight group just left of center with some odd hits all around. Bleh.

AP1GczM3aWUKpyQmtXyvCuWmfoSQvELSVSv9NoR6xORqrN45tuHltGsidFXiwgwsbW8Bzjy6NW0_NkzkdYV-je78YJ2ngalYyvHB_Ukmi66dn7NYZv2spEg9mbnTMH872u5-ggQcJEMYsxIHY2S4lOFwLSnQng=w1648-h927-s-no

Target #5 shows that I adjusted my sight picture the wrong way.

AP1GczMPDwB3PAVoiccdSsVSgUXOeF7BsSDzrpAMl1waIvj_hreiAwO1x1bQ0Sf5FpxBckcPOghERTEF3MjB6O5o2J2aHhqy8AeCSN5KTP2jKoILQKATD-IpvjOJvSxWjlKMPvta6WU5pfvq3RR-Wz2tljwUXw=w1648-h927-s-no

I'm starting to get my mojo back with target #6. The first shot on this target, marked, was really low-left. That was disappointing. So I tried to settle down and be a little more consistent with the rest of the string. Still, only 5 hits in the 10-ring.

AP1GczPwKSkuwJAwhlkJf5-N0Dtjjc6GsDpH3Zmbrv6GY8FYjIVwqRrvPKedMacPLxTFLffo2TCZmOPCbbDSqlGL9dlwMPhpIkgv9M11loPmtMBy06NAsmkHCFg5SDXNozkLZId0D6nFUdWN6lZZg_cvAHmqJQ=w1648-h927-s-no

OK, at least I managed to keep the rest of them inside the 8-ring. I know I can shoot better than this. I tried a little harder for target #7.

AP1GczMkBj0LTCmT1hCP16kBAieHT5WfCeAE6m9dBAqz_VTD8OKQ2SHz5t0ojqRWsvj_3HULgcenVN7ghPZDZsZRYtm22IhE-BIeq2T5UNQyMUE33LZGpmgolbPfpwGqhrYL44cCySmnZlhWmFRAYjcVhlKORw=w1648-h927-s-no

Hey, if you give me the line break, they're all in the black. Woot! Glam shot?

AP1GczP-rUJ6KfH_JzWY-53SJ8vp9OkfonEaIZKThx7aUkDvdmlQipGJgo9rZK6RrJ4NwQaLSeWjN_7eA5K3_LXg6Uk1w3gGwsto5-YRtityeuEAHW_tnVwgFw22M6sa7KBai_GUwqbxUqU5sihkWkX6e2Vepg=w1648-h927-s-no

Maybe what we need is a change of scenery. I stuck on an 8" reactive circle. Target #8 came back like this.

AP1GczNTzE4WZpJQmQBziGFeX5J6cTcbYUsdmnEz-5kxcGLdlZXp5w_bVHdnEJkw_uetQ0pPAUeATStQTnmS0rA1-H27e5q_LR4KOg5KDzBul_NOZA5xRg1lFmU_ShozEz57BnF-P-2DUgIEraMmsRmvnzWckA=w1648-h927-s-no

OK, that was marginally better. Even though I'm not shooting great, I wanted to try some distance. I patched up this target and sent it out to 15 yards.

AP1GczO7rmz7diXdftlIYLwW9SVn6F5DwMkHhLQE280rNpJ9B_0MYB5G7rBrkeXRuk3axqgWdsqF8k93gZiLtFx6nlJwXwGwErpuZ_EoKX40536HkuEKQty3hsTgx2lbBqGkUUCq4B1-1dnOC_Gv7NpBNOicjg=w1648-h927-s-no

I threw twenty rounds at it. Target #9 came back like this.

AP1GczOoblbBkTRhaLUt5SvlZ6E3Gd26qYH6ej65in8_OiCxj63cwEVZb7eiIp5cLvnqHSKapdPmv4V74w94P3-lg_yqqdhbRd9GwHBYSMfhCL5qTgf8_A8fxaFRG9e4GSw1ZqCu5MPfd7Sp3Uy3p7WuSP16tg=w1648-h927-s-no

Guh! I'm really embarrassed about those two shots totally off the paper. I should be able to get them all on the reactive circle. Maybe next time. OK, that's 100 rounds through the Echelon. Now let's play with my new plinker. I loaded up all 5 magazines, one 22-round and four 16-round, with Federal Champion and unloaded them all on this target. (No mals!)

AP1GczPj4q4FTTDGznIMwWOfS8ZzC66l735tqz9xToyy2Cbzd-51OTwDzQ_xiHobVH8h68Sg5-NvGtSs3j_hk0mPRDjOqR767iuOVQXdVvT1QJ0h9NaNMkpGKftzFBgtso42fvCeoP0zr_rILS-OkUBkYghweQ=w1648-h927-s-no

Yeah, not a great showing. Maybe I drifted the rear sight a little too much. But to be honest, I don't like the blacked out rear sight on this one either. Maybe I should shoot at something other than black targets, but that's all I brought today.

I patched up this target with another 8" reactive circle and a yellow bullseye sticker. I reloaded all the magazines using the Winchester Wildcat, pushed the target out a little farther, 12 yards, and this was my very first shot.

AP1GczNKeEUvWMGAKOsmgBOGLNtDBnJbVYOwhBAIZ3kO1fZa_Dmw8Z2Z9V9M4cEaBrVkv1IG_weu0_xCCr-vc2OFIkQEoy8WC0T4lSq8tsGF7CIhWYCSnYlXZK3bbfCkbqmkLBxowUmmRl-vFhREBrRAuYQSxw=w1648-h927-s-no

Let's see how well I can keep that up with the rest of the magazines. But, alas, I had a few FTF malfunctions with bent cases, six in all. Drat.

AP1GczMMUa_JRWK7X_qNCoq0EN9TOZtHfuu5hEvy9oIIdR2QWcll_-nzCCfrqtX407RW4f3VJtNthipXBmLitfJFFwYkhIQXDqRnZiF3tWEoLshuGP-yBTDc0T58oAh3r0ZZCG_9uiDkymKP4JiB_8SKuafrQQ=w1648-h927-s-no

I haven't cleaned this pistol yet so maybe it's my fault. After emptying all the mags, the target came back like this. There's only one hit outside the 8" circle. Drat.

AP1GczNC4eC1DXhxQEViQe5pE7rIQgj76aem6r8nrlP8NT49YZZtV57vxczuzH2hyeU3-sBUXKglJfj1bVp8cNBrFqVX2ISykCU0tBME65ukJpUEseZ8USMlXkaUlgVO7uQd29lo9nXPVafZyjw6ej0S-rn_Aw=w1648-h927-s-no

I have a few more targets with me but I'm running out of time. I wanted to try to do a little better, perhaps a little farther out. I loaded up the 22-round mag and one 16-round mag with Federal. Then I put a little Shooter Lube oil on the corner of my range rag and wiped down the feed ramp and chamber. There were no mals on these last two mags. The target came back like this after 38 hits.

AP1GczNF2dcyWkQtds0UhnRJYGq3aeTy8uMrMz65wlOXuCSHs1_duWkifiavJlN_5rLp5ALc5rhuZzLNQlhw4pOUH2fPY3jvqSys6WoNumn4RT0zs1LgUCMvGly7F3vdVVRSIjl6sKoh3Z1ZkH4b-q9IfS0i7Q=w1648-h927-s-no

That's a little larger spread than I was hoping for. I need to practice more at this distance. It'll get better. Or not. It's still fun! I packed up my gear, made my way to the hand wishing station (they provide D-Lead soap here), and said goodbye to the bunny in the back yard.

AP1GczM7W-BbzEx33ZvkwJoyChXaJ0lG1APVs3wE4CBqsWinPM6VMGRyeIbryYWPcULpam7VotPNSRvwnj4g6uNn-b0mmDK5-oM4tTqY7i2NIzU8XkuxW2PBYaPgEZAXUO7BprxPdznf_Y8rjY1M8HSvHS8o7g=w1648-h927-s-no

I do have an optic I could put on this Echelon and/or TX22. Maybe I'll try it out. Then again, I love the tritium Speed Sights. Let me see if they make them for the Echelon. I doubt they make them for the TX22.

Well, that's it. If you had half as much fun as I did, then I had TWICE as much fun as you. Thanks for dropping by.

Looks like fun! As always, ANY range day is better than a no range day!

As for lifting/carrying no more than 10 lbs? I’m guessing all your ammo alone made a pretty big dent into that (before guns, bags, etc.), and that’s not even knowing if those magazines are all loaded up. No worries, I think doctors are WAY over cautious as well and that their recommendations are for mere mortals, not members of the armory life forums!

Hi,

Good job there Agent, all dead bad guys. weird on that TX22 jamming. mine runs anything.

Thanks. I know these cheap little plinkers have a reputation for not being picky. Last week I started shooting it right out of the box and I still haven't cleaned it. Shame on me. I'll get to it this weekend before the next range trip. I'm sure it'll settle down.

Hi,

I don’t think your shooting is bad, especially considering the circumstances. Go Cliff!

Yay me! :ROFLMAO:

Thank you. But I think the circumstance keeping me from tighter groups is mostly these old eyes. 🤓

That, and the fact that I have quite several different sight systems on my pistols. The hold is a little different for each. Or so I like to tell myself. ;)

You got that right. :)

Yeah, I was pushing it a little with all my kit. But I know my limits. Mrs. BassCliff is so worried that, even though all my gear is very light, she wants to be my roadie this weekend so she can help lifting speakers. I wonder how that's going to work out.

Hi,

Looks fine to me sir, especially from recovering from your procedure, the way I look at it anymore, any range time is good, keep up the good work

Thank you. I do enjoy the practice. Who knows? One of these days it might pay off. I tell you what, it'll pay off when I get to take the grandkids and teach them how to shoot my plinkers. ;)

Why don’t you put some of that ammo money into a plane ticket to DFW and we’ll put you through our two-day Bullets&Bourbon boot camp. We start out by pouring a cheap ole bottle of rotgut called Low & Left into the gutter and by the time you finish we send you home with a newfound confidence and a bottle of our premium All Tens. And if somehow you don’t get what you were looking for, you won’t care.

That sounds like an excellent invitation. One of these days I hope to take you up on it. Thank you.
