Range Report: Couple Days of Target Practice, 9/26-27/23

Hi,

I just wanted to share my fun. I hope you don't mind. Mrs. BassCliff has been out of town a few days so I took a couple of quick trips to Fletcher Arms (the older one) to practice with my "target" pistols, the XDM Elite and Ruger Mark IV. On Tuesday I had a little fun with the Garrison too.

The baggie has the last 50 rounds of .45 from my loose ammo can from LAX Ammo. It runs great in my Garrison. All 100 rounds of the AAC 124 grain ran great in the XDM. The Wildcat .22 was just OK, with one FTE about every other magazine. I didn't clean the Mark IV after the last trip but it ran OK. I think it's breaking in. I promise I'll give it a good clean before the next trip.

I started with the .45 and wanted to try a different target structure. I'm shooting at 10 yards the whole session today.

After some lousy warm-up rounds, I guess this was the best target using the Garrison. I used a 10 round magazine on the B-8 center then 7 rounds on the little USPSA targets. Very soon I'm going to dedicate a whole session just to the Garrison so I can try to get over the flinch. There's still too much low-left.

Then I shot 100 rounds with the XDM Elite "Precision" 5.25 inch barrel. I brought my two new magazines and loaded up all five with 20 rounds each. Then I put 20 rounds on each target. The first two shots were really low-left but then I got serious.

Even with the thicker 'A' zone lines on my little USPSA targets, it's hard for these old eyes to see. I'm learning to trust my sights more. Here is 20 rounds in a 12x18" reactive silhouette.

As soon as I learn to pull the trigger straight back, I think we'll see some improvement.

And now, the star of our show, the Ruger Mark IV with its brand new HI-VIZ front sight. This really made a difference.

I like these reactive targets. I can see them better and the fiber optic front sight gets good contrast. Here's the fist target, 20 rounds.

Here's 20 rounds on the last target of the day.

I was able to come back the next day for some more target practice. I was planning only 50 serious rounds with the XDM and then at least that many with the Mark IV (still dirty but it did OK). Again, the first couple of shots were way low-left. C'mon Cliff, get it together! I started taping up the hits before I remembered to take a picture. Oops.

Target #2 is starting to shape up.

I shot a couple more B-8 targets then a couple of these dinky USPSA silhouettes. This was the last 10 rounds from the XDM for the session. I'm just trying to get them all in the big 'A' zone. That bullseye dot helped a little.

For grins and giggles, this is what the B-8 looked like underneath.

Then I went a few rounds with the Mark IV using the Aguila Super Extra .22 this time. Could this ammo be a little more accurate than the Win Wildcat? Here's 20 rounds in the first target.

Target #2, I had one bad flyer out of the 4" circle I used for a patch.

ADCreHcL6Rnnt9nnznB-Tq3lM_7Fp5QQXDC7pxQmzj0NJbBVdBJK8tBiy3m22s1itUl-lq2t8qshqrJx1uArOBXHoFO9Z_YRDsq5caHPd1qClqg_w1wVEi4LFjUJ3hBhkFYRguyaAy7Ll2RVEglQ2TwAnpx4AA=w1236-h927-s-no

I tossed on an 8" circle to patch it this time. Here's target #3, twenty rounds.

OK, last target of the day. Here's a glam shot with 10 round center and 10 rounds head.

I think I'm dangerously close to getting this one perfected at 10 yards. Soon I'll get serious about 15 yards. That fiber optic front sight really helps these old eyes. I might just join a fun league at my local range. Maybe I won't embarrass myself. Thanks for letting me share my fun.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
