Headed to the range today with 100 rounds of 9mm and 120 rounds of .38 Sp +P, along with my Diamondback SDR 9mm 2” and Ruger LCR .38 Sp +P 1.87” revolvers.
Getting ready.
Started with 50 rounds of Federal American Eagle 124f FMJ. First 6 rounds out of the DB SDR 9mm. Fiber optic sights didn’t work very well in subdued lighting of indoor range, but was able (barely) to use them as regular irons, and the orange colored front did seem to contrast an bit against dark rear. Astigmatism keeps them a bit blurry, but usable.
2h standing, single action.
Rest of the American Eagle, combination of 2h, 1h (strong), and single and double action. By the time I got to the six headshots, my strong hand thumb was screaming at me from the 70 rounds (158g JSP and 158g Double Tap JHP) of .357 magnum rounds I shot on 15 Apr 25. Those six attempts at the head were strong hand standing, single action, with thumb not assisting much at all, pointing out instead of squeezing grip.
Next up was 50 rounds of 124g Federal HST HP - thank goodness not +P. 25 rounds at 3 yds, 25 rounds at 5 yds. Combination of 2h and strong hand only, single and double action. In fairness, double action was almost like single action as this gun is very easy to stage. Shot the 3 yard distance first and by the time I got to the end of the 5 yard distance, right thumb pretty much useless in any type of gripping and was shooting quick to get done (though with only three moon clips, getting done quickly is a relative term)
Though I should have stopped here and went home to ice my thumb, I had my LCR .38 Sp +P with me that had yet to be test fired. So got it ready - at least no moon clips!
Plan was 50 rounds of Speer Lawman Cleanfire .38 Sp +P 158g FMJ, 20 rounds of Remington HTP .38 Sp +P 110g SJHP, and 50 rounds of Winchester Ranger .38 Sp +P 130g BJHP, this last being my intended carry round in any 2” barrel revolver.
Shot the first 10 rounds of the Speer into the top target at 3 yds, 2h standing with almost no right thumb use. LCR is DAO. After those 10 rounds, my right thumb was done, every round causing me to flinch. The remaining 15 rounds in top target and all 25 in lower target at 5 yds were all 1h standing WEAK hand (left is my weak). I even remembered to use left eye to aim! Felt pretty good with my weak hand results as I haven’t shot weak hand in ages, with anything, let alone a DAO 1.87” revolver with .38 Sp +P ammo.
Rather than waste my Remington and Winchester JHP SD ammo, just called it a day. I think this is the first time ever I’ve left the range with unfired ammo (while all guns were functional).
I really like both these little guys and look forward to shooting them when my right thumb can assist properly!
I guess I also learned I’m probably done with .357 Magnum in anything but my nice and heavy Colt Python, and even then, sparingly. .38 Special only in the Kimber K6s going forward, which I’ll test next time (after at least 2 weeks).
