Range Report: DSF104 Class, 1/22/24

Hi all,

Forgive me for I have sinned. It's been two weeks since my last range report. :ROFLMAO:

Yes, weather and family have kept me busy too. But I made it out to the range for my Defensive Shooting Fundamentals 104 class, a USCCA curriculum. I've taken this clinic several times but they always vary the drills and to get us scootin' and shootin'. It was a small class this time.

I'd brought this 124 grain for my practice ammo. The class normally calls for 100 rounds but we were having so much fun nobody minded going extra. I shot about 175 rounds this evening.

We shot several drills from the draw, single shots, double taps, three to five, sometimes head shots or numbers were called. We would pivot 90° or 180°, and do the "tactical stroll" from three yards to ten yards, firing at the threat on command. Just a couple of flyers on this target. Drat.

At one point we simulated a double feed to practice recovering from it. The instructor called it a "type 3 malfunction". I'd never heard it called that before.

Most of the time my little XD9 would recover with a simple "tap and rack" but once I actually had to drop the mag, "violently rack" the slide a couple of times to make sure it was clear, re-insert the mag, and get back in the game. It was good practice.

Our instructors, Jason and Ashely, are setting up the targets for a Tueller-type drill.

The targets would spin to face us for just under two seconds, we were to put as many shots on target as we could, from the draw. Then we added pivoting toward the target. It was another fun drill.

Our last drill of the day was the El Presidente drill, two in each target, mag change, two more in each target.

I was surprised at my performance. Not to toot my own horn, but the instructors were teasing me about the half inch space between my double taps. "Can't you do any better than that?" Usually I start to fade toward the end of the session. I guess I'd had plenty of caffeine. ;) It's time to go and I look back for one more "idiot check" to make sure I didn't leave anything behind. Jason starts sweeping up the brass.

There's still white stuff all over the ground around here. It will be a cautious drive home.

Several years ago I took a 3 day course from Tom Givens, from Memphis Tn, in the OKC area; also a 2 day class from another instructor John Farnum
