Range Report: E4.5F/C vs. G17L, 8/14/25

The classic “snake guns” really are in a league of their own. A Python is probably the most versatile starting point if you’re set on Colt—.357 gives you flexibility with lighter .38s for practice and magnums for serious work. An Anaconda is a beast, but definitely more of a hunting/field revolver with that 6–8” barrel and .44 mag chambering.

It depends what your intended use is. For a conceal and carry weapon I’m definitely not the right guy to answer that, though I hear the term J frame thrown around a lot. I have one Colt revolver and it fell into my lap so it isn’t something I would have picked, though it is a snake gun. If I were looking for a Colt revolver I would be looking at a Python or an Anaconda. .44 mag or larger, probably with an 8” barrel. Minimum 6”.
If you’re thinking more about carry or just general range use, a Python 4.25” or 6” is a sweet spot. For pure fun or hunting, then yeah, the big Anaconda is hard to beat.
Curious are you leaning toward something you’d actually carry, or more of a range/hunting revolver to enjoy alongside your optic-equipped setups?

Hi,

Is this directed to me or @Bassbob?

I'm keeping my eye out for a big revolver and a lever rifle in .357/.38 for recreational/fun use at the range. I keep telling myself that I need to take part in three-gun or cowboy shooting or at least steel challenge. One of these days. Maybe. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

Cowboy action shooting you'll want a specific type of revolver. Ruger has cowboy guns. Colt probably does too. Can't think of any Smiths off the top of my head. Three gun I think is usually a shotgun, AR and handgun.

Gonna need to work on accuracy, then speed 🙃😉

Hi,

I can't tell you how many times the first shot will be right in the middle of the middle, then the next shot will be off the target low and left. Gah! :ROFLMAO:

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
This is because your brain and muscles are unencumbered with any prior input and everything is fresh. After that first shot, muscle memory takes over, your nervous system starts to anticipate and you start to flinch, hence the gradual march low and left. You have to channel that fist shot, how it felt and repeat it over and over. Know that you can make that shot.

Those ragged targets you see me post every know and then are not just the cumulative effect of pouring enough lead in a given area. I like to work my way round the target picking very specific, very small bits away until most of the target is gone. It’s all zen. Being one with the gun willing the bullet to a bullet size space. Wax on. Wax off.

Yeah, there's lots of activities I'd love to do. I'm still figuring out what I'd really enjoy making time for, then get the right gear. I haven't had a chance to take part in the local steel challenge. I want to do that first before getting serious about other competitions. There's lots more skeet and trap shooting around here, more than the other styles. Monday I have another cognitive skills self defense class. Those are way fun too. ;)

As much as I love shotguns and given the fact that every fall weekend my whole life until the quail population was virtually eliminated I was out in the field with Pointers or Brittanys, you’d think I’d be more into Skeet shooting. I’m not. I probably haven’t shot clays in a decade or more.

Greetings and Salutations!

As I promised @Annihilator, today's adventure at the range will be a head-to-had match-up of my Echelon 4.5F Comp and Glock 17L. We're gonna see which is more perfecter. I was planning to use the newer range but Mrs. BassCliff's car is still in the shop waiting on a part. She dropped me off at the closer facility then went on her way. Guess which lane I procured?

That's right, lane #10. Although I could've had my pick. It wasn't very busy.

Here are the stars of our show. I'll be shooting 10-shot strings, mostly at 10 yards, at similar targets, using the same ammo.

AP1GczPqEEL60JkYkUDa0haC0Cuo-RrVfnr9bpTZLMhuHMyvbAR8kGkLD5ISHoo-6eTke9Pg8_NkzHapFQ74upuOinBVFIriUk5iT9NyDYMIzFLV1h4M6cXufwQ9a6LzmXOxPQEW6kjrZ22wCNY8XOGhNfkQGg=w1651-h929-s-no

We'll start with some side-by-side B-8 centers. At first I was taking turns alternating the pistols left and right.

AP1GczMAyCi1AgerTKv2pcp3PisZq3k2zPfFCUC-I3Dx6sppuKS_zPRboQidUrXjOTsGLghgo5I2JUhSUODYBZdc7zeIZNReWgU6n9CEkBHNsRDui7tkiynK4Mn077XzaqjAlTETh8Yu7c_uDRM7NUAXDSNgtg=w1651-h929-s-no

This entire session was un-timed, mostly slow fire, sometimes quicker, sometimes a double tap here and there. The first pair of targets came back like this.

AP1GczNl73Kj6UiD0onCFC7afrxW_3pBNl3IqY1mSdNWHAfXo7B_BbXqgXZZRCoPWrdEpBpMde3jnUveaiw6xSbkf1NPX3cFIeHuEDq0DtKdQ6pWntmcv_B2R5JUYPjA5Gs0IQ2eViTqMVbd36AV5lJSaQStxQ=w1651-h929-s-no

I think I'll give this first round to the Echelon. It had more hits in the 10-ring and a little higher score. For target #2 I shot the G17L on the left and E4.5F on the right. It came back like this.

AP1GczM6XI_CNvwnP_y_9lnP0B0-hQmYO1r9Hb_P85fm-03AKBANi89ZmhP8FNQGV6ubfPFEi6NX8USAW9_yGMemXm68_92hGz9PWvdyJfJIdAp7HSRpBOZDxjTaMlt2O4H_buy554SfzyBaY28trsATXyZ7sA=w1651-h929-s-no

Definitely the Echelon takes this round. I'm not sure what's going on with me and the G17L. I'll try to pay more attention to fundamentals. For target #3 I stuck on a couple of 8" reactive circles, then back out to 10 yards.

AP1GczPiZXkoemA-s5aHjAajW9t3DPj_3f-DpFdHykSVAA4xh82PVsN1bscoA5vVTHvk_YffTQE-3PXDiKSycR_bCsPnjBn5PghFW4njyolSjJfj7roBAGpP44mBXcF9hiGrWt8rDPhopyLrQO8KTlnzkpEqtg=w1651-h929-s-no

Target #3 came back like this. I think we can give this round to the G17L. I let one get off the target with the E4.5.

AP1GczNxGuAK7O-QUu58M9eOsM4GvSqcqE6yAJUXZMjJvGmgw-GP2zgP11sAY6i3b0Hpj1gpsBOgcyxjnGFuRoTgpwYKUsULeS7b1XYYyE3QOcmY8PXvbBqIwqkF7xzR3dExoP2o6EKARIl0rrZgaC0mq20xZA=w1651-h929-s-no

I patched up these targets and sent them back out to 10 yards. Target #4 looked like this.

AP1GczPVDo2csMCDMXdfgi4ioDlJyVH0c-Q_LOEIndTGH7mJzX2KdTM07akrnfGVcGfFGiS71JjG5d64j9pQ9pVzOwsyVkQwZE6zBItx4VKj6z1ac1R7pMfnYqkBfHf-tqbi28P-7I-g1Z8zvhawYlzekMZlug=w1651-h929-s-no

I'm going to give round #4 to the G17L because there are more hits right in the center and fewer hits on the 8-ring. Next up will be fresh targets sent out to 15 yards.

Dang, but these old eyes can hardly see that far. Target #5 came back like this.

AP1GczNyU1GCxtaGRuUMVyLHOkyceckcRA6FLjPyEhxEWetFYZH-sdU0fxAhr7VFeO5Up49xc-YPNQrGV8PNSTAZMn9j770_0_HC0KE47zR5mFtXO6s58WinUbEhCNNn2S-jf4m7-MHTVS-NgBeqbKZY5rckfw=w1651-h929-s-no

I'm giving this round to the G17L. Even though the G17L hit a lot high and left, I was all over the place with the Echelon. Drat. Next I wanted to try some "aim small, miss small" targets. I used small reactive circles at 10 yards, Echelon on the left and Glock on the right. I shot the top bulls first then the bottom.

AP1GczPuXFii5twNOT0mCj9g4R4F16a65FfQg9LxwU3O4v_EdlTa8CqtzSZxquqfEMBV2TXSRjYTG0xqFM-wobk_s1drWbGAGsBtRPWlqo9y2jEjgtatGYFBqOZQYx1UWa77aN8-sxxSsfZRl_NYNa1Grd5MjQ=w1651-h929-s-no

The first, upper left, target with the Echelon looked pretty good. I got only three hits with the Glock. Next, lower left, I let more than a few get off the target with the Echelon but they were still in the neighborhood. The last, lower right, with the Glock was all over the place with only two hits on the target. Drat. This round goes to the Echelon.

You've seen me shoot that Glock much better. I had 10 cartridges left and decided to try and redeem myself. I put them on this center of the B-8.

Well, center-ish anyway. I'm not sure what to make of my little competition here. You must take into account the unscientific method along with my mediocrity and ineptitude. It seems I shot the Echelon a little better today. But who knows? Next time it could be the Glock. As much as I like the Glock trigger, I think I liked the Echelon trigger better today. I know I just need more practice with both. ;)

I also brought along my TX22 for some plinking fun. I had just enough ammo to fill up all my magazines with a few left over. I also tried the little loader that came with the pistol. It doesn't work all that well.

I sent this reactive silhouette out to 10 yards, trying to remember how much 6 o'clock hold to use. I put two magazines on the center and one magazine each on the upper bulls.

Here's a closer view. You can tell that perhaps I was using a little too much 6 o'clock.

AP1GczNbeIgtJA91rqQ1Jfr6XzwHkEzDoXFe2AJ9v8M27PNtlyAS6tSnThRPaxWyhbyHMsz6BGkKLR40pa_Q3b4N_X8IPwiL7XvabnfHLsujPe69maMwU84hSxW12WfdPtGetC6cw7lfpDbyv5zFubSBp9xIDw=w1651-h929-s-no

I shot this target really fast. This gun is just too much fun. The Mrs. will be back soon so I packed up my kit, even though I still had a box of ammo left.

AP1GczNtK_s4lhkAYD8yAqJD2TjVo7MAqx8QK3dNeOsEKiD8gHyX6d2xuhRv7CjnMfUbXyXYNV5m5TQuMJxONeNO_72RwUWkJfT9eO_Ls4jFUtyi8UZr4uRejSwhWqOYsYO5NutQn2oVq753Gno6NVGumxDsaw=w1651-h929-s-no

While I was waiting, I perused the counter. I've been experiencing an itch for a 357 Mag, maybe a revolver and a lever. There were a few in the display case.

AP1GczPd9POkVL-zluuKh3cLndthvi1O3MY2oHXKJtrrVJ0F6_EsZB7WPLlEL4awVT21-guDuVUFbBUlaEhpCRZm5BWPD7QjW_-MY4q5K_reuRTOMdtnqwEGeONek7kNBprNt0QH6v8I3dFRkEO9B_2vL6OTsw=w1651-h929-s-no

There was also a used Taurus at a somewhat reasonable price.

But I think I'd like to add a S&W revolver to my "one of each" collection. Well, my ride is here so I'll say "goodbye" and keep saving my gig money. I'm still looking at a Hi-Point too. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
as always great report and pix. btw that SW 29 .44 mag competitor in the shot above caught my eye. Might have to go look at one.
