Howdy friends and neighbors,
It was a glorious day for a trip to the range. Not too hot, not too humid, not too much traffic (not that there's ever any much traffic here).
I drove out to the newer facility because that's were I'm picking up my new Henry Lever Action .22, 20" octagonal barrel, Skinner peep sight, walnut stock, etc. It's a real beauty.
After the paperwork, I found out this range was having a special event. Dead Air Silencers was having a demo day and the range was closed after 2pm unless you wanted to try out one of their suppressors. As much fun as that sounded, I just didn't have the time. So I headed back to town to shoot at the vintage facility. I was able to procure my second favorite lane, #4.
It got really busy while I was there. Plus someone was making a lot of noise with a machine gun. I did not see what he was shooting but it was very raucous when he ripped through a whole magazine. BRRRRRRRRPPP!!!! I started with my new Henry. I knew I'd have to sight it in. I sent the target out to 10 yard to see how close it was and begin the process.
I'm gonna shoot 5-shot strings until I'm satisfied. The first target, right out of the box, came back like this.
OK, pretty tight group, just high and left. Let's see, how the heck do I fix that?
A little tweak here, a little tweak there. The next five hits came back like this.
I think we're on the right track. I won't bore you with all the adjustments but here you'll see my last two 5-shot strings at ten yards.
Those last five shots were pretty dang close. Now I'm going to send the target to 25 yards and see what happens. I used my range backpack for a rest.
The first target came back like this, still a bit left and high, unless I adjust my hold.
Tweak, shoot, tweak, shoot, until I thought I was ready to shoot a whole tube (15 rounds) at a fresh target. Here's the last target.
OK. That's really not too bad for these old eyes. If I don't use a heavy 6 o'clock hold the hits will stay centered. This is going to be good enough until next time. Maybe I'll get outdoors, bring my binoculars, and try to shoot 50 yards or so. Now lets put a quick 50 rounds through these two dirty pistols. I promise to clean them up before I take them to the range again. XD9 Mod.3 and Glock G17L. Oh, I bought another Glock magazine. I like having at least five. Both ran fine with the PPU 124 grain, 10-shot strings.
Oh! I also shot both pistols at 15 yards for the whole session. I really employed fundamentals but still shot too fast at times. Starting with the Glock, the first target came back like this. This one has two (10-shot) magazines on it.
Drat. All but one hit inside the 8" reactive circle. Let's see if I can do better. Here's target #2 with twenty rounds.
That's a little better, a couple of close misses. Let's use a good old fashioned B-8 center for the last 10-shot string and I'll slow down a little.
Hey! That's not too bad for this old noob. Did somebody say, "Glam shot!"?
Wow, but that's a long barrel. I like it. I picked up some TruGlo sights for this, on sale for Prime Day. But now I'm thinking I will save a little gig money and buy a set of tritium SpeedSights for it. I really like those sights. Oh yeah, this one has the optic cut too. So there's another option. Maybe if I practice enough I can use it for competition.
Anyway, let's see if I can do something with the XD9.3 and its green dot. I tell you what, 15 yards is a long way for these old eyes.

Yuck! Even my yellow sticker didn't help. I won't bore you with all five targets. Each one got a little better until the last one, which deserved a glam shot!

) will ever be able to do 1" groups. But I'm sure I will improve a bit with a little more practice, perhaps a little more tweaking on the sights. I suppose if I want to get really serious I could install a scope to help my eyesight but this is such a fun little plinker, so pretty, that I think I may leave it stock and use it to teach the granddaughters.
