Range Report: Lousy Day at the Range, 3/20/24

BassCliff

Professional
Ladies and gentlemen,

I thought I had a pretty good day at the range last week. This week, not so much. Since I have a training session coming up on Monday, I wanted to practice a little more with my EDC. I also brought along my Rossi RS22 for some plinking fun. I utilized the older facility today because it's closer to the house and closer to where I buy my favorite beer.

Maybe I was so lousy today because I took lane #10 instead of lane #1 like I usually do.

AP1GczOPHhTCwIJBoX6eapkF9STlBZI9Nf-wsdAiwrXhyRiRb6MXMcFoF_rlpMkkvoNwaDqXJlFuOUoVjf9RwndZFZHSxVt2pibh-0u9S3xiEzeZOu7yzCxOqGhx2-s1mfh6tRkq-zB9NY7PHgUOy5-ZwJok1w=w1236-h927-s-no

I brought along 100 rounds of 124 grain Blazer and 100+ rounds of .22LR. I'll be shooting 10 shot strings with my XD9 at 10 yards.

AP1GczNmMNsr7XzK6azJNpp4zU1mubEJ52qesZtQZz1D3tfVtUrsq1LxzbicEtTnkYQtGo25bYbEBSbEQhtEIm6zPxaFb0aqMBvldh1FWNHF54skhrZD6X87nDI2-lp9GmPm-MsyUmClO7Gbi5lg_-JwsFYx_g=w1236-h927-s-no

It's been quite a while since I've run a 10-10-10 drill ala Larry Vickers. I ran five today, all of which were pretty sad. These are the best two. I won't even show you the cold drill. These are #2 and #5.

I used to be pretty good at the 10-10-10 drill, scoring in the high 80s and low 90s, but I'm way out of practice. I'm going to start practicing this drill a little more often. OK, it's time to change targets, slow down, and be more accurate. I like bringing a few different targets. I shot a couple of these "Zero/Group" targets with less than average results.

AP1GczPZ0ysBCH13lvbDYtHVcXtWrco1LGsXwcXbOfAVEm7GbVontOC7jhGZ1WcWodGmfgej3w9qzQ9cXYnnFc9WcVyO32PFBIR8do8VGdAdzcnU5b2pFnbE399bt3PNy953B9l8YmbyqWr3s8ZN8rjDAifCmQ=w1236-h927-s-no

Then I tried 10 head shots and 10 "vitals" shots on these targets. I kinda like these. I think I'll use them more. Still, less than average accuracy for me.

AP1GczP42eVkwHOj5M6Gk_b40ULkOyLac3Ax2Phwci8gI2yx0TuNmzOvwDNsVtbb6AbbBBCFbTuQNTwkq-tY4aJaf6hds7oHpfBebhiPr8vCeu5FpwpnfuBKxaEj5pB-vPWMUcw8pv7NGR-6PFlFC0JzeyBBrA=w1236-h927-s-no

I finished this part of the session with one of my favorite targets, but still with average results.

Well, that was disappointing. Let's shake it off and move on to some plinking with my little .22 rifle, Rossi RS22. I shot the rifle at 25 yards for this session, no brace, just free standing. I really wish my eyes were in better shape. Here's the first 10 shot string.

I patched it up using an 8" circle with a special "Coop" bulls eye. I'm hoping the contrasting color will help me see better. ("The Coop" is a local breakfast/lunch place we frequent.) Another 10 shot string.

This is the view of the target at 25 yards. Maybe I'd do better with a scope and magnifier. You can barely see the yellow "Coop" bullseye.

The .22 round does such little damage so I just kept patching this target even though I had brought extra. These are not cheap, ya know.

Here's the last target of the day. I had brought 100 rounds of the Aguila Super Extra .22 plus I had a few rounds left over from another big box of Federal something or other. You'll find 30 rounds on center mass and 17 rounds in or about the head.

Well, at least I had fun today. I'm hoping the next time you see this rifle I will have installed the "tactical" furniture I bought for it. I'll get it cleaned up and install the folding stock and 25 round magazine I purchased months ago.

This rifle is much more accurate than I shot it today. When I put it on a brace it does really well because I'm not wobbling around. :ROFLMAO: Anywho, I appreciate you guys having a look at my mediocrity. Hopefully next week I can get my groove back and pretend that I know what I'm doing. I'm planning on a training session and a practice session next week. Just a little progress every week is what I strive for. Thanks for putting up with me! You guys are great.

Why are you shooting so many friggin rounds?8 yards, do you draw from holster? Or low ready?stance grip sight alignment- draw and shoot, not over a slow2sec. Get the job done. Quit wasting all that ammo. Get an instructor

Hey @BassCliff while you’re looking up shooting instructors in the yellow pages why don’t you see if you can find a couple of sensitivity training sessions for your new pal @CAPMARINE276.

🙄🤔🤬🤬🤬

It's OK. I deserve some flack for posting imperfect targets. When I grow up I want to be like you and @KillerFord1977. ;)

In the meantime I'll keep training and practicing. It's fun! :D

I've had off days also, sometimes it just happens. Don't overthink it, next time you go it will be all better for no other reason then it was just a better day. On the bright side the groups would of still suffice for EDC purposes.

Hi,

I'm happy to answer your questions. I'm also hoping you would have time to look over some of my other range reports. I must have over 100 postings just on this forum, going back to Feb. 2022, that document my training and practice sessions. I'd be pleased to hear your thoughts.

Why are you shooting so many friggin rounds?

Because I can. I'm retired, I can afford it, it's fun. Depending on how many guns I bring to the range, I normally shoot 100 rounds of 9mm, 50 rounds of .45, and 100+ rounds of .22. Lately, if I bring my AK, I'll shoot 40 rounds of 7.62. Most of my training sessions require 200-250 rounds. I usually train with my EDC but sometimes with one of my other 9s or 45s, just in case.

Most of my training is for self-defense so we run drills from 5, 7, 10, and sometimes 15 yards. I practice at these distances too.

do you draw from holster?

Yes.

Or low ready?

Yes, this too, depending on the drill or my practice itinerary.

stance grip sight alignment-

These are terms I'm very familiar with. I've also trained indoors and outdoors using motion, pivoting, multiple targets, moving targets, "combat" and "emergency" reloads, single hand and off hand, paper targets, steel targets, bowling pins, etc. Granted, I'm still a noob (FNG) that has been training once or twice a month since Aug. 2020 and practicing once a week. Sure, perhaps I should be better but we'll just blame that on lack of talent. I know I'll never be a competition shooter. My only goal is to protect myself and my loved ones should the need ever arise.

draw and shoot, not over a slow2sec. Get the job done.

My draw time is under 2 seconds, sometimes under 1.5 seconds if I've been practicing regularly. You can't tell by this last session but for the last few months I've been concentrating on my accuracy and not speed. ;)

Quit wasting all that ammo.

I don't think it's a waste. I just count them as fun units. Sometimes I'm ON and sometimes I'm not. This was a really bad day, even for me.

Get an instructor

I have several. I'm a member at a couple of ranges and take instruction often. What you have to realize is that I'm that student in the corner with the Dunce cap on. I'm the guy who gets picked last for the team. But I am still training and practicing for that day I hope will never come.

I think this link below will show you all my range reports on this forum. I know, I'm a bandwidth hog. Feel free to share your experience with me.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I thought I had a pretty good day at the range last week. This week, not so much.

Maybe I was so lousy today because I took lane #10 instead of lane #1 like I usually do.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
you know, i know what you mean about "favorite" shooting lanes..

at the public range, i prefer the last lane #12 for 2 reasons,

1) no one can step on my brass,

2) i like the wall on my right side....as this really helps me gather up as much of my brass as possible.

at the club, i am all alone, so no brass steppers, and i prefer the #2 port, with the wall to my left..and i got all the area to sweep up for brass. my brass, (everyone cleans up after themselves, so no extra brass for me)

if i use any other lane at either place, i am all discombobulated

but those are not the sole reasons for my bad days...some days we are good, some days..........well....we need another nap.
