Bless me, sharpshooters, for I have missed. It's been three weeks since my last range session and I have fallen away from the target. My apostasy is apparent. I will dry fire every day for a week as my penance. Perhaps then I can be forgiven.
Today I decided I did not want to clean four of five guns all at once so I brought only two to the range on this glorious day.
I was fortunate to receive my favorite lane, #3. I sent my favorite target out to 10 yards.
It would be a simple get-to-know-each-other action today with the XDM Elite 4.5" 10mm. I'll be utilizing five 10-shot strings at 10 yards since I brought only one box of 10mm. I brought a couple of partial boxes of .22 cartridges for the Ruger Mark IV.
I'll order some more magazines for the 10mm soon. I have at least five mags for all my guns, so having only two is a little inconvenient. I loaded'em up and got started.
Before I left the house I had installed the magwell on the XDM. But it seemed to give the magazines trouble.
Sure enough, I really had to slam home the first magazine. After my first 10-shot string, the magazine would not eject. It was stuck in the magazine well. I coaxed out the magazine and removed the magazine well.
Perhaps I should've read the owner's manual. I think the two other included base plates should be used with the magwell. The standard "flush fit" base plates are too big for the magwell. Doh! Anyway, I got it sorted. Here's the first 10 hits with my new 10mm.
That group is nothing to write home about. I noticed that recoil was about the same as a .45ACP but somehow "gentler". I added 10 more hits to this target.
I let three hits get a little more spread out. I'm still trying to figure out how much, if any, six o'clock hold to use, plus trying not to upset my sight picture. I'm going to patch up this target and try 20 more hits.
I always hope that yellow sticker in the middle will help me aim. Meh. Not so much today. The patched up target came back like this.
I guess I got more hits in the middle but the string drifted low. Next time I'll try more of a combat hold rather than any kind of six o'clock hold. Oh yeah, and not upset my sight picture.
I've got 10 cartridges left in this first box of 10mm. I'm going to patch up this target one more time and try to pay attention.
Well, all but three hits are inside the 9 ring on this target. That's about the same size as the 10 ring on a B-8. I think my combat hold let a couple of hits drift too high. Hopefully this will improve on the next outing.
Now since the Ruger Mark series has come up lately on the forum, it reminded me that I haven't shot my Mk IV for quite some time. I wanted to have some plinking fun, going from my "biggest" handgun to one of my smallest. I started with 50 rounds of the Win Wildcat.
Shooting at 15 yards, the first target came back like this.
Sure, a little more spread than I was hoping for. Let's try 50 rounds of the Aguila ammo at the same distance.
The target came back with a little tighter group but not quite centered.
For the next 50 rounds, I'm going to have some fun at 25 yards.
Yeah, quite the spread. I think I'll practice more with this target pistol.
Neither ammo worked flawlessly today, quite a few FTEs and a couple of duds. I'll try a different brand of ammo next time. I've got almost 50 rounds left. I'll work at a distance a little more forgiving.
At 15 yards I can see the target better. I managed to keep most of them in the black. I'll work toward getting them all in next time. It's time to pack up my gear. I think I'll leave my tape bits for the next guy to patch his target. Thanks for hanging out with me on my new 10mm day.
