Dear friends,
I had time today so I went for it. Three times in a row to the range with these pistols, trying to get a handle on them. I think I'm starting to, sort of. I went to the older/closer facility because they are also my FFL. I thought there was a chance that they'd received my new Sig 1911. But alas, they had not. So I went ahead and procured which lane? My favorite lane, of course.
I had the place all to myself for most of my session, but I did not run any timed drills. It was strictly a fundamentals day.
Same as last session: .357 Magnum S&W 686-6 Plus, 6" barrel, 7-shot; SA Garrison 1911 .45ACP; SA XD45 Mod.2 Tactical; using LAX Ammo/Freedom Munitions. I signed up for text/email alerts from Freedom Munitions. I get texts about every other day with codes for free shipping or 15% off. Their prices for .45 and .357 are really good, and with free shipping it's hard to beat.
Today was a normal "marksmanship" (if you can call it that) practice day. Targets were at 10 yards using 10-shot strings, mostly slow fire, although I did shoot a couple faster, but not what you'd call "rapid" fire. Here's my carrier lined up to the 30 foot mark, although I think it's a little farther away than that. It doesn't look quite as close as the 30 foot target in my basement laser range.
OK! Let's get to blastin'! My very first, cold target using the Garrison came back like this. I thought I was being very fundamental, even sticking on a little red dot to focus.
I forgot to print more B-8 centers so I used these little silhouettes. Target #2 was better.
Target #3 was about the same, more centered but with one bad flyer.
With target #4 I shot a little faster, about one second between shots. Accuracy suffered even more. Two of the hits weren't even on the paper.
I settled down with #5 and had a pretty good group, although I pushed it a little bit to the left, and one or two flyers.
That's 50 rounds through the Garrison. Let's do the same for the XD45. Here's target #1.
I think overall I shot the XD45 better today. There's only one hit outside the A box. Glam shot!
She's got a great looking Grip Zone.
Here's target #2. I was kind of proud of myself so I shot this one a bit faster, and paid the price.
One really bad low/left flyer. I'll settle down for #3.
Hey! If you're generous with the line breaks there's only one outside the A box on that one too. I'm really having to dig through the dregs of my printed targets. But I thought this one would be good to "aim small, miss small". Here's #4.
I was also kind of proud of that one, until I saw it. So to punish myself, I used the You Suck target for #5.
Well, there ya go. I might suck but at least I didn't have to leave the range. I put another 50 rounds through the Garrison and the XD45. Using the back side of the silhouette, I stuck on a few 4" reactive circles, 20 hits on top, 20 hits in the middle, and 10 hits on the bottom target. That was the plan anyway. Here's the Garrison results.
Here's the XD45 result.
Hmm, seems with both of those the first (top) target was really rough but the other two were better. Now let's have some fun with my new wheel gun. At first I thought I'd just shoot 25 rounds. But it was so much fun I shot the whole box. Here's 50 rounds though the reactive silhouette with the .357 Magnum.
Before I realized it, I was down to just a few cartridges left. I was able to put the last three through the head, on purpose! I can make this pistol work for me when I want to.
I packed up my kit and when I got home I realized that I have just about run out of room in my gun cabinet. What's a fellow to do?
My new Sig 1911 will be here next week. I hope it will fit.
Hey, you guys have been great! If I keep practicing, hopefully I'll get pretty good before I get too feeble. Everybody stay safe and enjoy your blessings.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
