Range Report: Optics at 15 yards, 4/2/26

Hi there,

I had time for a quick stop by the range today after lunch with the gang from church. I had plans for a holster workout but had to pivot once I got to the range and found it unsuitable to my needs. There were too many shooters in the short range, the only part of the range where we can draw from holster. So I decided to work with a little extra distance on the long range instead. I got my favorite lane, taped a couple of 3x5 cards on a small silhouette, and sent it out to 45 feet instead of my usual 30 feet.

The plan for this target was to put 30 rounds on the center mass card and 20 rounds on the head card. I started with the Echelon using the Remington 124 grain ammo.

I did not stick on an "aim small, miss small" bullseye. Maybe I should have. Those cards seemed pretty small out there at 15 yards.

I sent 5 shot strings until I had 30 toward center mass and 20 toward the head. I guess I got them all on the paper but I still need work using this pistol. Maybe I'll try a different backstrap and adjust my grip so I don't pull the muzzle off with my trigger press.

Less than half my shots found their intended 3x5 card. I was shooting those 5-shot strings pretty fast, but I need to tighten up that grouping. Next up is 50 rounds through the Mod.3 using the Blazer Brass. Center mass got 40 and the last ten hits were head shots, mostly.

I started a little low-left but gradually got the grouping more centered. At least all the hits were on the silhouette, except for a couple of near misses on the head shots. I should work at 15 yards more often. This whole session was shot rather quickly, both because I didn't have a lot of time and I wanted to see if I could keep it together at the faster pace. I was a little disappointed with the Echelon but thought I redeemed myself a little with the Mod.3. After 100 rounds I packed up my kit and did a little window shopping in the store. This looked interesting.

This 6.5" Colt Woodsman is not in mint condition and I don't know what year it was made. Was the last year 1977? I've seen better examples going for three times or more that price. But it's one of those quirky guns that always catch my eye. There's some scratches and wear. Descriptions include the words "safe" and "functional". What do you think?

Anyway, that's it, just a quick stop at the range. Next time I'll be a little more serious with my practice procedure. Maybe I need a break from these optic pistols. I'll figure something out for next time. Thank for hanging out with me.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

One thing that I have learned - and this applies to me - I can't seem to shoot accurately beyond about 15-20 yards with these smaller pistols, like a G26 or a P365, etc.

Therefore, if I am going to carry a gun because I expect to engage at any distance greater than, say 10 yards (+/- 30 feet), I want to be armed with a gun I feel confident shooting at that range.

That said, I do think the optics will extend that distance on the smaller pistols for many.
