Range Report: Two Guns and a Glock (NGD), 7/9/25

Well, howdy all you rootin' tootin' pistol shootin' gun slingin' hombres, and muchachas!

That's right. I added a Glock to my "one of each" collection today. I had to fill out the paper form and type in all my info again online. At least the background check was quick.

I was surprised that the G17L came with three mags. I was going to buy a couple more but they had only one on the shelf. I almost bought the 33 round monstrosity just for grins and giggles. But, maybe later. After we did the deal I got the rest of my kit and was awarded lane #1, my favorite lane!

I brought 150 rounds of S&B 124 grain so I could put 50 rounds through each of these today, a couple of dirty ones and a new one. XD9 Mod.3, VP9, and G17L. I had put a couple drops of oil on the slide, barrel, and recoil spring so I could shoot it today and clean it up later.

I understand the G17L has been, or will be, discontinued. I have a few in my collection now that have been discontinued. I think that's a little bit cool. Oh, I immediately put the large beaver tail backstrap on the Glock. I've seen folks get bit pretty good. I had no trouble today. We are going to shoot these using a variety of targets at a couple of different distances. Starting with the G17L on a good old B-8 at 10 yards, the first one came back like this.

AP1GczPciugizIAn86HTEbD_OuQ3sM6Y4tx20L-NfCf9Q7k1M37YOvpIGrIkw5TYWao-bSTfL7ZDH7ol_8OYL3SLRyplNsg07q8s7v9I2JBDVPo56sRhdRV4G3VEitsPxpVqpConJwL5uRpNPncYibo7tSuHMw=w1648-h927-s-no

I don't hate these Glock sights as much as I thought I would. I've already ordered a set of TruGlo tritium for it. Until then, let's work with what we got. Here's target #2.

AP1GczPv6JrUHsMexd8e3uriYiaZXQWDxGeFNsWUgll3VVJbOnot6gx6LCFhv7gWPuOHQKNASkVd4yx9EQ6Echr-mJabYpSOCDk6c3ULKRjSSY1nvbJE9l5WnNT5OKKYbLD5ZivAFdWMkW7iNs2LV06WbfNJTg=w1648-h927-s-no

That's looking a little better, I guess. I'm surprised how well this thing shoots. The trigger is nothing to write home about but it don't suck too bad. Here's target #3.

AP1GczMpUdJyeoNZSE3_GVSgcO29hQjdvPpcS5u7cJUT1e5gb4kfVMG-9sKvdM39eholKqzGMDLwNnd-Zgbm4p_zEbHstGLGwLRjXW26Uoq058HMCd4ffP2xQ_fufwXhHAf3Vsbkpv1i03Is5ZP3-6xOruP5vg=w1648-h927-s-no

Hmmm, one group of 5 a little high and the other more centered. I'll shoot a couple more 10-shot strings and see if I can get the hold figured out. Here's target #4.

AP1GczOwIpWw4p2ArsKoVMgAaQRrNEOmR_PxZa2FwJbd6Dxx6LIEsD_APox43b5SDCa24I_HfJ7iRpsC8MRk1mFbXi4o8aobdcvJ-ncwy2wmrTcY03nNwRIOhDI6rbvT9lrIBZHxF86iJkKJqAw4PwfBmT3uaQ=w1648-h927-s-no

OK, that's a pretty tight group with most of the hits actually in the 10 ring. I'll take it. For the last string I'm going to use a small silhouette with a postcard taped in the high center chest area. Target #5 was sent out to 15 yards and came back like this.

AP1GczMcc2qe4gB6U2qkfI4l1unz_wAuk5ViC-wWolzUTUIF9E91QfR_eecEP6Aoh7rHxW62AeGqCLntnb7Rg3mTBudvOW43ktGe0V9TIcgBYfac5A4JzbJnQkoNxczgMOXVIJYz3M_tHBCFyRBy0MzzH4BX-g=w1648-h927-s-no

I guess I wasn't paying attention and let one off the silhouette, but the rest are fairly close. If you give me line breaks you could say that I got seven hits on the postcard. Oh well. I'm having a lot of fun shooting this Glock monstrosity (6" barrel!) but I must move on. Next up is the XD9 Mod.3 with the Holosun optic. Again, I'll start at 10 yards for four targets and push it out to 15 yards for the fifth target. Here's target #1.

AP1GczNSih3BG5cwPhLVWPrYAhyuaTVZcVJUMhcxlAFLlxvAG0i5VrlIDqSzc3M-jOeLgYlD9-7ZOD-84hRJxiTKHZ4hd-kU5gt3hnaATFZkEx1LAYNt6mVg26hWrCt9wUNBXZmaRYNW9twTiXDTrxCFz2X5pA=w1648-h927-s-no

I let two off the card. I know I can do better. I'm going to patch this up with a reactive sticker and try again. Target #2.

AP1GczOKvNIbxyhkXVbbVncBavGx_j-JK3GDGAJ64FTul-vLLg5NaumtXFRQcrfgLRtPMcwQ2uewTdQJVDS2DCC4_UlIRORtDV-9mJlZYIVxlFw9yOoMPFD6NjXwbKvK4TK5v_eY68bd1dA2Yb7OTrKJYkFIJQ=w1648-h927-s-no

Well, a nice group of seven hits but then three low hits. Let me pay attention to my grip. Here's target #3.

AP1GczOpUtUBqmWfDOejyPNgNfHqkCyhXmlwvq_DYB0WPdOLbX3d_dLfjuLyDK-aD52ikvLmqPzf2CjGKhOgnMXbqD8ltaV5hUj9gaVve9ChpUtDg-He17pWfbMw9l7Nf2y2ZW5n5AQLqJWf-xEez4l_Av06tw=w1648-h927-s-no

Well that's just yucky. Let's go back to the regular B-8 and see what happens. Target #4.

AP1GczN-con7L_GFJsG-zyE_dcGhju11JMO0cl9KLAacbYjMhVYDyr1P0fK2ZM4-LhcDjKMo5fMMBZOxCixuUPGR9ig_kUngWOq8G3seFwI6CbiTxdIAIU_QABpUIlLxH6BtXO-caR-aNF30P1Y4HR2BqWZ3wQ=w1648-h927-s-no

OK, I guess I redeemed myself a little. I'll send another B-8 center out to 15 yards for the fifth target using the XD9 Mod.3.

AP1GczN6ermKjzHqBGDTzifXGoWO-BUgrYmJ2_lBz93Vh4s1RcY4nfBho8KFx6PjkRpthqUB54_xMjdLk3-yQH1LTv4-iB1Mf_luXtahYGtdrCzhyXoMj9CnVJaYogNJ8VFHfPZ-CcAdwDFmXf30k6zJVtM-yQ=w1648-h927-s-no

That's a little above average for me, at 15 yards. One of these days I will shoot the whole session at 15 yards, just for the practice. Oh, sure! How about a glam shot?

Let go back to our silhouette and postcard to start the VP9 part of our show. Here's target #1.

Sure, I could do better. Here's target #2.

Gimme a line break and they're all on the reactive circle. Glam shot?

Here's target #3.

About the same, one may have gotten a little low. I'm going to send the next target out to 15 yards and put 20 rounds on it.

I guess I was in a hurry. I'll do better next time. Let me sweep up my brass and get out of here.

Thanks for hanging out. See you next time.

Hi,

Nice, what Gen Glock is that, I’m thinking since it came with 3 mags, it’s a Gen 4 and is discontinued. The Gen 5 Glocks have a somewhat better trigger then the previous gen’s. Good shooting sir!

Thanks! The invoice says it's a Gen 5 MOS, with optic cut and plate. The trigger felt better than other Glocks I've handled. I think it's a good addition to my little collection.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

all of my gen4's have the finger grooves, but not all have the mos. those plastic sights are not the best for sure, but manage to get the job done................well on the g21 anyways. it shot very well with wwb 230's @ 15 yards or maybe it was just me :sneaky: ! i think you're having the same issue like me................trigger discipline by guessing.

I know we all like what we like. I'm not really a fan of finger grooves, unless they fit. ;) I like the finger groove "suggestions" on my VP9. They seem to fit nicely. I think that's the only pistol I own with any kind of groovyness. The TruGlo sights for my new Glock just came in the post. I'll get those installed eventually. I want to practice with my new unit before I let some gunsmith have his way with it. ;) I'll start practicing more at 15 yards to see if I can tighten up the groups, especially with that 6" barrel. Every little bit helps.

Hi,

Thank you. ;)

I like the caps-lock rule for the 4473 maybe the implied angry typing helps the BC go faster...

I have to remember not to use the Caps key when typing. Otherwise all my entries start with a small letter. Oops. As you can tell, sometimes I'm not a fan of redundancy.

And your one of each collection you had to get one of if not the longest barreled Glock i guess some collectors want long barrels...

If I'm going to own just one Glock, I wanted it to be somewhat unique. I do like long barrels for use at the range. I use 4" barrels for concealed carry. I don't want to open carry but I think I will get some duty holsters or drop leg holsters for a couple of my longer pistols. I want to start doing some more "tactical" training with a slung rifle and pistol. That would be fun.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
