Range USA, the nation’s largest operator of indoor gun ranges, has reached a milestone: the opening of its 50th location, in Chester, Virginia. Since its founding in 2012, the Cincinnati-based chain has grown into a powerhouse in firearms retail, training and community education, now welcoming shooters in over 14 states.

Range USA’s expansion shows no signs of slowing. Two additional locations are slated to open soon in Smyrna, Tennessee, and Monroeville, Pennsylvania. In 2024 alone, the chain welcomed 350,000 new shooters, contributing to a total of more than 10 million visitors and more than 300,000 students (classes and private lessons) trained since its inception.

the majority of indoor ranges (chain of more than 2 anyway) are IK for a plinking session but that’s about it.

However I would caution anyone looking for a retirement gig. I was going to work one in Ohio and the manager had me come in for a day to watch the classes.

They have quirky rules, like they didn’t want any 511 type pants or even anyone to wear hats, no outside the waist band holsters and of course you had to teach off a obsolete power point someone else made years ago.

And I get they don’t want a loose cannon going off script on some BS but they didn’t even consider looking at anyones (mine) lesson plans that I made to instruct professionally.

I went to one in Shorewood Illinois. Granted it was nice but I felt very uncomfortable there especially after trying to buy ammo there online. Illinois is a little funny with their laws but I can ammo shipped to my house with the appropriate ID’s (and have it done all the time) but they had issues when I submitted everything to them. They didn’t realize the laws for Illinois and I had to pick my orders that they started screwing up.

I was thinking about getting a membership but I’m not a fan of going towards Chicago because of all the construction. I also shot there once to see what it was like and I had such an anxiety attack it wasn’t funny. They had a time clock for how much time a person had a person had along with the RSO hovering over people (I don’t mind having an RSO but not hovering over me).

Needless to say I haven’t been back or any desire to go back. It’s just a glorified city range in my opinion.

Corp consistency across markets.
Corporations cant have 14 diff policies for 14 states and 75 instructors all with separate lesson plans.
Just like when folks travel, the hotels style and service should be the same across states.

Unfortunately subzero temperatures prohibit shooting outdoors in these parts. 🥶
Come to these parts of the USA and you’ll find the white stuff and cold weather. Yes they close I-80 due to snow and SA is about an hour from me
Yep, you guys are absolutely right. I just thought about the good parts of the year and not the winter. It does make a difference in your point of view.

We do occasionally get cold here, I think our record cold temp is something like -10f, and we do occasionally have some bad inclement weather (I remember back in the 70s we had a serious ice storm that left us without power for over a week) but nothing like you guys probably have to go through. So I have to admit that you are right there, indoor ranges do have their place at times.

We just got “Christmas weather” this weekend.

105 in summer and drizzle with 34 in fall/winter

I’ll take indoor thanks
We don't get quite that far out but pretty close. We hit 100 in the summer off and on, and in the winter we will see numerous days barely above freezing and a few well below freezing.

I'm an RSO at a state-owned outdoor rifle range on Sunday afternoon. One day last winter the high was 20-something and the wind was about 15mph as well as I recall. It's a covered outdoor range but it's unheated so it wasn't a lot of fun. Luckily we didn't have a lot of shooters so they shut the range down early. I would have taken an indoor range that day myself.
