Replaced my carry ammo today

While attending a gunsmithing course in Louisiana a local PD Detective brought in his S&W model 36 complaining he couldn't eject rounds from the cylinder. He said he routinely sprayed WD40 on the loaded revolver. We removed the cylinder and had to use a wooden dowel to remove the green corroded rounds. Thank goodness he never had to actually fire it.

Ammo has a pretty good shelf life. In the early 1980’s my Grandmother fired .32 S&W rounds from an old (1905 vintage) hand ejector Smith that had been loaded in 1921. It went bang. The cases were green and the lead slugs were white, but it fired.

While I agree it’s terrible for firearms it’s not water based. It’s derived from mineral oil. Ever sprayed wd40 over an ignition source?

When I was a kid red shop towels and WD 40 was all there was to clean a gun along with Hoppes for the bore.
