In the 1500s, spiral grooves cut into gun bores were used to spin-stabilize bullets fired through them. While the method of creating these grooves has changed, this system has remained the same and is considered “best” by nearly all barrel makers.

It always amazes me how without all the high dollar cnc, lazers and all the computer controlled that they have today how they built guns so accurate long time ago with the simple machines.I have a reprint by the GUN DIGEST of the extremely rare 1893-95 Mauser Catalog. It shows the factories where they build rifles and ammo how they used steam boilers that turned shafts and belts that run the machines in the factories. Some even powered generators for electric motors. In one factory they had 15 boilers that turned 2600 meters of shafting driving driving over2400 special machines .DAILY production of 2500 rifles and 1,000,000 cartridges. Monthly was 60,000 rifles and 24,000,000 cartridges. It shows all the tests they did, shooting rifles over 12,000 times and compareing it with a new rifle. Bullet penetration in different kinds of wood and even ice all kinds of tests.Number of revolutions of bullet in first second 3200. Didn't mean to hijack your tread there TAYLN But how they built these rifles long ago is amazing.I'm gong to try to figure out how to scan this catalog.
