Gettin' old sucks!
For close to 40 years my primary carry gun has been a lightly modified 1959 Colt LW Commander in .45acp. I love this gun!
However with age and a touch of arthritis I discovered that I don't shoot it as well as I once did. Now mind you that I do still shoot a full size, all steel 1911 pretty well. But with my LW, I just wasn't getting the consistent accuracy I want for self defense.
As much as it pains me, I needed to change to something else in a lighter caliber. I have plenty of options in 9mm, but I wanted to stick to my tried and true LW Commander format. That's what I'm used to and what I've trained with. Its second nature to me.
I'm a old fashioned, hard headed old fart. I hate the whole idea of a 9mm 1911.
However, I am a big fan of the 38 Super cartridge.
So I set out to find myself a LW Commander in 38 Super. It turns out that NOBODY is currently making one.
I found a couple of used ones on GB and the like, but they were wanting plumb stupid money for them.
I realized that if I want one, I'll have to do it myself.
It took a while, but I traded into a Ruger SR-1911 LW Commander in 9mm. Its a good gun. But It needed just a few changes. I started by eliminating the FLGR for a standard set up. I changed to an arched MSH as it fits me better and some nice grips just for looks. Then I ordered a 38 Super barrel from Bar-Sto. A friend of mine who knows a lot more about 1911s than I do fit the barrel for me.
Over the last couple of months, I've been testing it out and experimenting with ammo, recoil springs and such. Last Thursday I took it to our clubs Action Pistol range for some run and gun exercises. Well, in my case it was more like shuffle and gun.
I practiced drawing from concealment and double tap drills, multiple targets and shoot and move exercises. I'm happy to report the gun performed beautifully!
I can now declare that's its ready for carry.
Not too shabby for a half blind, decrepit old man.
