Rusted Ruger

How many remember this badly rusted up thing, it's been bathing in motor oil for a while now. decided to get it out and put it together. it still needs to be re blued. but it works. it was frozen up solid with rust. i deleted the pics or i would post them again for ones that didn't see them

Nice. Did you strip it and clean it ?

You could hot blue it or pay someone to, but I think with, Brake Clean, Oxpho Blue and a heat gun you could do a pretty okay job cold bluing it for less than $20.

I soaked it in rust remover for a while, it was still loaded. liked to never got one of the bullets out of the cylinder. then i stuck it in Delvac 1300 for a long time. it's an old three screw Ruger that hasn't had the recall done on it and i doubt they will do it now.

I think I would want to take it as far apart as I could and clean all the small parts before I fired it. Or wasted time or money bluing it.

Ruger will give you the conversion kit for free.

I'll go along with checking the bore and shooting it first just to see if its worth the effort to re-finish it.
Its gonna need a good bit of polishing before you even consider a re-finish. That will add to the cost unless you do it yourself. But polishing is where a lot of damage is done. Polishing on power wheels causes dished screw holes, washed out markings and such.
If it were mine, I'd take my time on a good hand polishing job and re-blue it myself. I've had excellent results with a product called Blue Wonder.

I've had a couple pitted firearms over the years. I like the gray Parkerizing, it fills in the smaller pits and makes the larger ones less noticeable. The last one was a 870 wingmaster. It was a rusted mess.

I took this thing apart and inspected it a lot more. the bore is not too bad. so i put it all back together and walked accross the street and fired it. video is still loading at rumble.

I don't mind sayin i was feered for my life. i was more nervous than a long tailed cat in a room full of rockin chairs. you can see me shake in the video which i shake some anyway from nerve damage but nowhere near that bad. lol. Also mounted me camera on the leanin tree. .i did shoot 38 special in case it blew up the explosion wouldn't be as bad. also forgot hearing protection and it hurt.

As of now , going foreward :

You're not able to get back to * origonal * , you're looking at a practical Shooter .

Attempting to polish it down , and a proper old school Blueing would be impractical $$$ , and still wouldn't be " origonal " .

Of reasonable modern high tech finishes , that will be more rugged & durable than new , Electrolysis Nickel will deal better with pitting than Hard Chrome .
