School shooting in Nashville

Mental illness is a huge problem in America.
i was just responding to an email from a family member. she is sick and tired of all the shootings.

i agree, and i too told her about the people with mental health issues, and NOT seeking help.

christ, we send billions of dollars to other countries, we spend millions of dollars on crap that really is a waste, but how much is spent on actual mental health care...???

Well, you know, spending tax dollars on citizens health care…that’s socialism.

Spending millions on other countries is generally going into the military/industrial system, so they can funnel it back into congress, that’s what America is all about.

Seems ol’ Dwight David Eisenhower was spot in.

It really seems the world has gone mad. Has the human race has changed so much in the short time i’ve been around? This was unheard of when i was young. I don’t know the stats (and good luck finding reliable ones) but my guess is there are as many guns per capita now as there was 40-50 years ago. My PA friends used to bring hunting rifles to school during deer season to fo out in the field before/after school. My dad’s high school had an indoor range in the basement for their rifle team. But i don’t recall anybody doing anything like this.
Something is different and there is a lot that has contributed to the difference between now and then.
Can/will it ever go back “to the way it was”? My gut says no. It rarely ever does. Not sure what the future holds but it doesn’t look so good.

I studied countless mass killings for a training program I did for organizations a couple years ago. In almost every single case there were indications present for an intervention had people in authority known what they were seeing. Well trained armed officers are the last barrier when everyhing else fails, but many schools do not have that safeguard.

I’m sure if you were to do the research this has been going on forever, just not at the numbers we’re seeing now. I can’t believe that 40-50 years ago there were the same amount of guns per capita, particularly given the astounding number of guns sold over the last three years alone. And as you correctly point out a vast majority of those were hunting rifles. As well as revolvers. There were no/few ARs and/or semi-auto pistols. But that is almost irrelevant when you consider that one of mankind’s crowning achievements has been coming up with more inventive, more efficient ways to kill one another. I think the genie is out of the bottle and eventually it will get to the point that we will all experience this firsthand or know someone who has.

How about spending on school safety not other countries

basically, as i see it from my past as well, when we were younger, fists, settled scores.

then along the way, came gangs, oh there were gangs back in my day too, but again...fists settled many things.

then came a gun, maybe taken from the home, that settled things

then came more gangs, and they became more violent. stolen guns, settled many things

then came more and more guns, thru the black market, those settled many more fights.

mental illness was always with us, doctors took care of that with either a frontal lobotomy or shock treatment

then came mentally ill people that stayed away from help

then came no bail or refusal to arrest or prosecute many.

the lack of security everywhere, allows many with an agenda to kill, and to do so, in a heartbeat.

we will become an armed society ever more so in the coming years, as with the sickness of politicians not getting tough on crime, will continue, until we VOTE good solid crime fighting, border closing, deporting illegals, politicians into office.

I am surprised that the shooter was able to access the school via a side door (per reports)....surprised all doors weren't locked and visitors have to be buzzed in.

I too wonder why so many folks are struggling so badly with life and day to day issues....I grew up in lower middle class Georgia in the 70s and while we didn't have much, very few, and I really mean very few, had problems to the point of affecting others.

I pray for our country, the families that lost loved ones, and for those first responders who had to deal with this today. Tragedy for all

Mass killers have been arround since BC. I often used Vlad the Impaler as an example. Hitler was a lightweight compared to Mao who murdered as many as 50 million. But what we are seeing today is different. One characteritic of modern mass killers is narcissism, and a sense by the killer that he is a victim. For some of these people there is a perfect storm of social media, violent video games, violent movies, detachment from reality, poor parenting, helplessness, untreated mental illness, and the list goes on

I just heard on TV it was a 'trans' woman ..... now I'm under the impression that a trans woman is a man who wants to be a woman, not a legitimate woman. My god folks, where is all this going? Even though there may be more guns per capita than there were a few decades ago, the guns and the functionality of those guns have not changed, other than in cosmetics. But something sure as hell has changed over those same few decades.

We all agree these type shootings are a real tragedy .... some would even say it's the price we pay for living in a free society. I'm not sure it's a price that needs to be paid at all. Take criminal use with any gun seriously and take the criminal out of society ... period! That won't end it all, but will certainly reduce the number of 2nd offenders. Then rethink the mainstreaming of those with mental illnesses. It's sad these people have the issues they do, but as long as they are put back into the general public, these type tragedies will continue.

Now I'm not saying everyone with any semblance of a mental illness is in this group. Only that it has to be apparent to anyone who will think it through, that those who do these type of things (mass shootings of kids) are not rational, sane, nor sensible people. Likely it's not their fault, but neither is it the fault of society in general. So the question becomes should they be turned back out into the public and asked to continue with their meds when we typically know they won't, or maybe can't. Should society in general be obliged to endure the insanity that some bring?

I don't have the answer, but I know I'm as sick of these senseless shootings as anyone. I'm also a hard core supporter of the right to keep and bear arms. I do not believe that infringing on any pro-gun owner's rights will reduce these shootings. But to debate it to the other side makes us all look like brutes that have no sympathy for these defenseless kids. Just this morning I was attacked verbally and accused of being a "gun nut" who cares far more about my guns than about the "lives of children". I've got to tell you, that hurts deeply, but I know to the other side that's exactly how it looks.

I've said time after time, you design any law that negatively impacts the criminal, crazy, or druggy, with no negative impact to the law-abiding and I'll support it 100%. But if it in any way negatively impacts the law-abiding, I'll fight it by every legal means available.
