Shooting Insurance

Sorry this is a long one

I'll admit that I used to think it was a good idea; but that was before I stared talking to them. Of the ones I considered, some ONLY reimbursed you after you were found not guilty (that not much help), and all advised you to not say anything until the lawyer was present and THAT is a mistake. OK its a mistake if you cant keep your wits or if youre prone to making up things.

Your title in a report will either be VICTIM, Suspect, or both Victim/Supect, and once youre listed as a suspect, NOTHING will change that. Consider that when the 911 call comes out the responding officer is looking at his watch and wondering how long this is gonna take; because hes just like you and he wants to go home. You not talking doesnt upset him, its one less thing for him to write. So he wont be getting YOUR story and wont see the events from your point of view. He wont know where to look for the gun that got tossed away on the roof or in the sewer. He may glace that way but hes not calling the FD for a ladder to look on the roof unless you tell him. You may have told 911 that there were two guys but if he didnt see the other guy as he was driving light and siren to you, chances are that guy is gone (maybe with the gun). Sure maybe there is video but thats days away from being looked at UNLESS you tell him what happened.

Dont LIE DONT Embellish. Tell him what happened, not every detail to start but what caused you to have to shoot. Details can come later BUT first you have to convince him that you ONLY YOU were the victim. You can toss in that you are older then the suspects and you lost half a lung in the war or have a heart condition. You might even ask for an ambo to check you out because you have high blood pressure BUT dont stop talking to him. The medics will be good witnesses, so dont flirt with the hot one until after its all over and you take pizza to the fire house. (BTW pizza to the police station is probably better than donuts....) but thats for AFTER

Cops have seen enough to "know" that bad guys ask for an attorney. They wont automatically assume you are a bad guy, buuuut? and yes in a police shooting the internal affairs guy wont talk to the office until he has counsel but thats not your concern.

You cant just say "I was afraid" or "I was in fear for my life" those are what every you tube attorney says; but cops have heard the crap too. This is where you have to articulate,. really sell your story....
"I gave them my wallet and my watch; but they wanted my wedding ring. My wife passed away 3 years ago and I just couldnt give them the ring, its all I have left from her. I begged them to let me keep it and they hit me, so I shot them. I didnt want to but they wanted her ring... Officer I thought I hit the other guy but he ran away, is he ok?. Can I sit down, Im kinda wobbly, I think it was from when they hit me"

Dont do the "I play golf with the Chief" crap or do you know judge Sally Rottencrotch. He wont know the Chief, and probably wont like him if he did, cuz Police Chiefs are politicians and cant remember the last time they had to miss dinner with their family to write a report then wait for 3 bosses to approve it before going home and then be back for the next shift which is rapidly getting closer.

Sell your events. Dont be an *** doing it. If you need to sit or want a drink of water say so. If you need to check your insulin, tell him. If you need to call your daughter to come get the dog, say so.

If you screamed profanity or something racial, better to say it early and apologize because that really not you; but you were scared. Thats understandable in the heat of the attack; but less so when its played on some ring door bell video later.

Its really not that hard. The insurance companies are selling fear. If you insist that you want insurance then maybe dont wait for the attorney, you can always inform him later; but chances are you wont need him.. VICTIMS dont need attorneys

I agree all insurance is based on fear.
I carried for years before I realized it'd probably bankrupt me if I ever needed to use lethal force.
I pay about the cost of a single 9mm round every day for that peace of mind.

Whats your peace of mind, that some lawyer youve never met, who takes a payment to be on call for a group he may not even support will give you the best defense possible for whatever the insurance company is paying him?

Im just saying it might be better to meet with a couple firms and establish a relationship, in case you ever need them, at least then you wont be a total stranger

I am glad to see this topic. I have been meaning to ask about this.
They seem to say it's better to have and not need it instead of needing and not having it.

And the contrast between the plans is drastically different.

THEN...

I found out Right to Bear isn't actually insurance!

Well, you do what you want; but as for me its a NO

Can you speak in complete sentences with minimal profanity? Can you explain what you saw, what you knew (or believed)? Can you articulate why you believed you HAD to use lethal force? Its THAT simple

Were you legally at that location (not trespassing, not breaking into your Ex's house to get back the dog)
Did you see a threat (to you or someone else)?
Was the threat against you or someone else
Could you retreat? Should you retreat? Would it be morally correct to retreat?
Can you safely de-escalate? Is de-escalation morally correct?

Ask yourself those questions, then be prepared to explain those answers to the police. You cant just say you were afraid. You must make the police feel the threat you felt. Lawyers tell you not to talk to the police but they arent the ones facing charges. Your lawyer will go home that night, he may even have sex, if you dont convince the police you were the victim, you wont be going home but you might be having sex (it just might not be the kind of sex you want)...

So you can pay for insurance if you want or maybe try to remember the way your English teacher tried to teach you to speak

this is a very sore subject for so many, for various reasons....

I have been a member of the USCCA since i got my cc permit back in June of '21.

supposedly, as long as you were NOT breaking the law when you shot someone, they pay the lawyer of your choice from a list of lawyers in your area. i have several criminal lawyers to choose from where i live.

too many insurance companies to choose from for sure.

its what I DO.....

and

could care less what people think of me, and what I DO.

this is like one of those threads where..............

1) what's the best gun company?

2) what's the best gun lube?

3) what's the best caliber to carry?

4) what's the best pick up truck?

5) what fast food company makes the best french fries....

no one's opinion is ANY BETTER, than another's......

Brother You should do what you think is best for you. I certainly dont think less of you for it. If its comforting for you then give them your money. Im less concerned about the gun insurance stuff, then I am about their lawyers telling you not to talk to the police.

I get that most of the lawyers are worried what you will say and that will get then a check in the L column BUT maybe the gun insurance companies might want to give classes on what and how to explain the incident

my response to you was only for the subject at hand, not an attack on you, sorry if you took it that way.

but like i did say, this particular subject has been dicussed many times, and people argue/debate/berate others for what they do....

as i said...it is what I DO..........anyone not liking what i do, or has something negative about it, then tough noogies......

and yet...they still debate me.........like STFU.........

(not you)

Hahaha my friend I didnt take it as an attack at all. Yes its been debated a lot and I guess Im still willing to throw in a few more paragraphs.

Yes everyone including you, is free to make their own choices, and Im just a "barracks lawyer" (I like that one), with a bit of real world experience

Best

I tossed the "insurance" shooting company I had been using and went with Attorney On Retainer a few years back when I lived in AZ before moving here to far Northern Nevada. Never had to use them, came close
