Before I start this, some of the following is a bit tongue in cheek with some serious intent. Take from it what you will.
I began my travels through the survivalism maze in the late 70s. That was long before it was called prepping because some folks thought "surviving" wasnt enough. I was finishing up college and Mom & Dad werent interested in stockpiling any more then the canning that Mom and my Grandmother did; but they did consent to the occasional Christmas present (from Santa) of a case of C-Rations (yeah that long ago) which I stored under my bed....
Then I went into the Army and got to eat C-Rations for real... The Army convinced me the real answer to survival was not being where things were bad, unfortunately thats where they seemed to send us. I developed an appreciation for "Not Being There" and "Movement is Life" (sorry I stole that one from World War Z). When I was a local Cop, I found a kindred soul in a partner that was both a Zombie fan and recognized the likelihood of a collapse starting with riots. We mapped out our patrol area, using a school with an interior courtyard as a base and where food stores and gun shops were located. The Freddie Gray Riots came close; but thankfully the Zombie Apocalypse didnt occur while we were still on the job but it did make for some good debates to get us through the shifts.
I always wanted a cabin in the mountains (wherever that is); but kids and bills and new guns always seemed to put a hitch on the idea (that and a wife who wanted beach property not the mountains). I did have a camper that was in a campground near where I hunted. The area is nice, the small town kinda nice; where they were happy to take my money but I was always gonna be an outsider. It was far enough from the cities that the Entitlement Hoard would have to seriously mobile. It felt like a good place but I couldnt see me living out of a 24 foot trailer for any length of time.
Eventually I moved away from the Bodymore Murderland zone to a free(er) state. Im kinda on the suburban edge of rural, out of walking distance from the Entitlement crowd; but still close enough for their "pimpmobiles". Id still love to have that hidden mountain retreat but being retired Im not thrilled at the thought of two mortgages.
I suspect most of us are in the STAY category and theres nothing wrong with that. Id love to bulletproof the outer walls but that seems like a bit much (until shots are fired, then Ill wish I had filled those sandbags....). At home I already have my supplies of food and water and a generator that I bought for storms.
What I have done is reach out to some folks in the area that seemed liked minded. We wont be a any serious fire force; but maybe a "Watch" on steroids. Id love to say that in the event of "troubles" we'd set up barricades and "Stop Stips" but thats just not gonna happen (or its not something Im gonna admit to on the web....) This topic has convinced me its a good Idea to buy beltfeds and grenade launchers. If I never get to use them in anger, itll give my kids something to scratch their heads over with a WTF when Im gone.
Stay or Go whats your plan?
