Few things in life are scarier than a sharp knife forcibly pressed up against your skin. Unfortunately, if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, this could very well become a reality.

Knives are available everywhere, and if a “bad guy” threatens you with one, your life could be at stake. But this doesn’t mean you have to be a defenseless victim.

There are viable self-defense techniques that you can employ to either control your assailant’s weapon or remove it from the conflict altogether. Here you’ll learn the dos and don’ts of knife defense and, most importantly, how to make it home alive.

1. Why did I let somebody I don't know get that close to me?

When I was in the 7th grade somebody pulled a knife on me in the hallway at school. I grabbed him by the throat and slammed his head against the door to the Teachers Lounge and started to beat the hell out of him.

The biggest advantage I had was he was convinced that him displaying a weapon was going to make me freeze.

When I decided to fight back and attacked him his brain took time to process what was going on and begin to try to defend himself and by then it was too late for him.

True story. At the Solder of Fortune Conference I got called up on stage to help demonstrate knife fighting techniques . So the lecture boss told us to walk thru a block...of course, after the block I incorporated a strike, just like my long suffering father taught me. The instructor stopped us and said something like "Class he is getting ahead of the instructions. Clearly, he is a man that has spent some time behind the blade". To which I replied, "Yes, but it was with a fork in my other hand". Played to a big laugh. After the class, I asked the instructor why he selected me out of the audience. He said "I knew I could count on an Applegate Man."
