Springfield M1903 Trigger Guard Question

I have a Springfield M1903 and have a question on the Trigger Guard. What is the purpose of the cross pin in the rear of the Trigger Guard assembly? Attached are photos of the trigger guard for reference.

Good question, I haven't even fired mine for a year or two (or had it apart)...I await someone with a good reply. What year is yours? Might make a difference in design features. That rifle was made for quite a while....

My research pulled up a big fat BLANK....

But it's location seems to me to act as a trigger stop, possibly.....

In the old days they tried all kinds of things to shorten, or eliminate the first stage of military triggers

Got a response from the CMP:
This was an endeavor to reclaim the old faulty trigger guards that had a defect. The old style allowed the trigger to push forward and if the rifle was cocked it could fire. The fix was that pin. It was placed there to stop forward movement of the trigger. The later style had the trigger hole milled to the right dimension
